If I were going to try to convince someone of the value of Andy Milligan’s work, VAPORS would be the film I’d show. In fact, I HAVE shown it to a few people over the years with that purpose. It’s a gritty 16mm black-and-white feature set in a gay bathhouse and it seems very much like a “small theatre group” play, which makes sense since Milligan himself ran a few such theatre groups. The film transcends the gay aesthetic it represents and is really a meditation on loneliness–gay, straight, or whatever. While the room-tone echo on the recorded sound takes a little getting used to, it should not diminish the quality of the acting, which is quite moving in the case of the two leads. While the late Mr. Milligan was a unique filmmaker, Warhol always seemed to be his main-man artistically, and that’s clearer here than anywhere else in Milligan’s work. Milligan obviously knew what it meant to be lonely, to be afraid, and to reach out. This beautiful but raw film captures that as well as, for example, any Bergman film or Saul Bellow novel. History will view this film as a pioneering work of cinema. Please be warned, though, that it is NOT for the casual viewer or the viewer who cannot see beyond the film’s lack of traditional qualities of slickness and “professionalism.” Seeing this on a big screen at the time of its minimal release must have been a revelation!!! If Milligan had never made another film, this would rate him as a major filmmaker in my book.

Old crone matron Claris Manning, who redefines the word “crotchety” with every bourbon-fueled blast from her mangled maw, just can’t believe that her ditzy daughter Carol has invited the money hungry members of her hated family over for a holiday get together. No sooner do the bequest buffoons show up at the ratty old mansion than one by one they proceed to push up some pretty unpleasant daises. Some are stabbed. Others are electrocuted. His rejection sends our amiss miss into an infantile rage. And all the while, shots of completely unrelated two-toned hippies making mattresses mudpies are inserted into the narrative to give the film some grindhouse Seeds of Sin.

Bloodthirsty Butchers, The Ghastly Ones etc and definitely not a good starting point for the Milligan novice. However, the movie is not without its dubious and very cheesy merits. Milligan regular Hal Borske is loveably kooky as the “monstrosity” (an understatement!); the film frantically races from one absurd scenario to the next; and there’s cheap-jack gore a-plenty. The wonderfully demented gut-ripping sequence is a highlight; the matter-of-fact manner in which the villain slices his victim’s abdomen and yanks yard-upon-yard of intestines from her makes for a truly head-spinning spectacle. Special mention must also go to the infuriating siren-like title theme that sounds at every given opportunity.

Monstrosity is certainly no lost classic but those poor souls working their way through Milligan’s back catalogue may find it more entertaining than the disdainful comments in Milligan’s biography suggest.

Stomping back to merry olde England, Bloodthirsty Butchers is a claustrophobic mess. Sweeney Todd slaps around his mistress, wife, and…second mistress. Sweeney Todd maims his barbershop victims, then gives the bodies to the local bakery. Sweeney Todd deals out marriage advice. Badly. Filled with horribly tight compositions, goofy sex (shoulders only, thanks), infrequent energy, and tiresome bitching and yelling, Bloodthirsty Butchers is a hump in the road. All women are depicted as pawns of evil. Milligan’s sets (a couple of blank rooms) and budget hit the dirt, moreso than usual. Attempts at violence are limp. When a search for highpoints leads to a neon-tipped boob in a pie and a rare light-hearted ending, trouble is afoot. All hate. No heart.
