Synopsis:
In one of the realms, there was time for the prince to get married, but the bride would have to be a real princess. A sign was put up on the gates: “ A Princess Wanted”. But in response to it there appeared only a small girl, wet to the bones after the rain and bearing no resemblance to nobility. So the prince was obliged to venture off to other lands in search of a suitable match. Henceforth the prince’s adventures unfold. In one kingdom, he met a fat king, in another – a hospitable king. He also visited the kingdom of arts. He saw enough princesses, beautiful and clever. And yet, the real princess, the only one he longed for, proved to be the girl who had knocked at their door during a rainstorm…

Review:
This is the classical retelling of the charming fairytale the princess and the pea, the story of a pretty young girl who arrives at a castle claiming to be a princess. The prince falls in love with her at once, but his cautious parents decide to test her to see if she is a real princess by putting a pea beneath twenty mattresses she must sleep on. This film focuses mainly upon the handsome young prince, who, just after the arrival of the self-proclaimed princess, sets off on a quest to find a real princess to marry. During his quest he encounters a foolish, superficial princess, a princess who challenges her poor suitors with an impossible riddle to get rid of them and a princess devoted to art. Returning home empty-handed and broken-hearted, the prince realizes a real princess has been under his nose all along in the form of the young girl who arrived on his doorstep. Beautiful scenery, a wonderful storyline and great acting combine to make an enchanting film that I highly recommend for those who love a good fairytale.

A lavish two-part costume tragedy based on the classic The Dowerless Girl by the nineteenth-century playwright Alexander Ostrovsky, A Cruel Romance (also known as Ruthless Romance) was the biggest Soviet box-office hit of 1984, though it seems to have had little international exposure until now.

It marked a change of direction for the veteran Eldar Ryazanov, who up to then had tended to specialise in contemporary comedy, though it seems to have done his career little harm: he was made a People’s Artist of the Soviet Union that year – and no wonder, quite apart from the film’s commercial success, its mostly wart-ridden portrait of the venal, money-grubbing bourgeoisie of the then-discredited Tsarist era must have gone down a storm with the Soviet authorities.

Anatoli Yefremovich Novoseltsev works in a statistics institution, whose director is an unattractive and bossy woman. An old friend of his, Yuri Grigorievich Samokhvalov, who gets appointed assistant director of the institution, wants to make Novoseltsev the head of the department but encounters objections from Ludmila Prokopievna Kalugina, the director. Samokhvalov then advises Novoseltsev to lightly hit on the boss. Ironically, Novoseltsev and Kalugina fall in love with each other…

A masterful, pro-elitist, Tatiesque film from Elem Klimov, 22 April 2006

This is story about a dentist with the talent of painlessly extracting teeth, and what happens to him as a result of being naturally good at his job. It is told with humour (much of it quite subtle, almost surreal, and in the background – imagine a street scene where everyone on the sidewalk on one side of the road walks in just one direction, and on the other side in the other), poignancy, and a frequent breaking of the 4th wall between the movie and the audience (think of what happens in Shakespeare’s plays, and you’ll be close). It also features some songs by Novella Matveyeva, a famous Russian singer-songwriter (her songs are sung by the leading actress).

Without revealing the details of the plot, I will just say this: this film is not very friendly to Communist ideology. One should not take that to mean, as some critics have, that it is simply a metaphor for Klimov’s own experiences as a filmmaker, or that its criticism applies to Communism alone. To do that would be to miss the point. The film’s final message (that society inevitably ostracizes those who are gifted) applies to all societies everywhere. It cannot be any other way – the gifted people in any society are, by definition, significantly outnumbered. In light of this, the film could be called a pro-elitist one.

The message is something that some (the “Dilberts” of the world) will inherently understand and love the film for, and others will find repellent – the audience that I was watching it with did not seem to like this film as much as Klimov’s earlier “Welcome, or No Trespassing”, which was in essence more-or-less a harmless kids’ film. “Adventures of a Dentist” is not a kids’ film. It requires a certain amount of wisdom about how the world works to understand, and its humour is quite clearly aimed at a higher level (although it is by no means less funny).

In the end, the film gives those who are receptive something quite serious to think about. This is without a doubt one film that I will remember, both for its all-too-rare brand of humour and its very relevant message. It is only a shame that as far as I can tell, this film is not available anywhere on DVD. It was only released in less than 100 theatres in the USSR (some say just 25), so it is not nearly as well-known as it ought to be. Despite this, I hope that some of the interest in Klimov’s more famous film “Come and See” will rub off on his other films, and somebody will put this out on DVD eventually.
