Plot Summary
Desiderium lyrically charts the hapless loves of three brothers: Majid, they young handicapped brother with a deformed head falls in love with Aghdas, a prostitute hired by his eldest brother Habib to entertain him, not knowing the truth about her profession. Karim, the middle brother is so infatuated with a quail that he almost completely ignores his wife and her emotions. Habib himself is in love with Foroogh, a tailor lady who lives with them, while his sense of responsibility about Majid keeps him from requiting her affections.

Overview
Sooteh-Delan AKA Desiderium (an ardent desire or longing, especially a feeling of loss or grief for something lost) was made in 1978 by director Ali Hatami. Though he failed to break out into the international circuit, Hatami is considered an important Iranian director and this film in particular found popular success domestically. It was rated the #4 Iranian film in Film magazine’s 2009 poll of 92 Iranian critics. The film stars Behrouz Vossoughi, one Iran’s most beloved actors.

There is an old saying in Farsi, “if you catch a Toughi to keep, it will bring bad omens to the members of the family”. …And that’s what happens to a very close nit family when Toghi is caught for keeps. A well respected uncle plans to marry a young woman who lives in a far away town. He asks his young nephew to bring the fiancée home to him. On the way back the young people fall in love, get married in secret, and return home with their secret. They’re both afraid to tell the truth to the family. Eventually the uncle finds out, and to teach both his nephew and his fiancée a lesson he starts a bloody revenge.

Hajji Hossein-Gholi Noori (Haji Baba) goes to Washington D.C. as the first Iranian (Persian) ambassador to the United States of America. After he opens the embassy, he is unable to invite statesmen to visit him. Haji fires the embassy staff due to the inability of the Persian government to meet the embassy’s needs. One night he is visited by President Grover Cleveland.

Despite Washington’s enthusiasm for the task of ambassador, he is constantly thwarted by lack of funding from the regime, the problems of establishing connections, and some general confusion between the Iranian and the Ottoman embassy. Problems really arise, however, when he gives political asylum to a Native American.

This film delightfully captures the spirit of the times with wonderful performances by Ezzatolah Entezami, as Haji, and Richard Harrison, as president. Largely shot in Italy, the film, although made in 1982, was not screened in Iran until 1998 after the Reformists came to power.
