The son of an Argentine chemist travels to Vienna to solve the murder of his father. Step by step he realizes that his father was internationally entangled in Secret-Service machinations and chemical-weapon sales and ends up in mortal danger himself. Meanwhile, he also realizes that there is no connection between his father’s murderess and those dubious activities. Her motive for killing him goes back much further, to a court hearing during the Third Reich.

This film was later remade by Carlo Rola with the same title in 2008.

Scotland Yard goes after a gang that drowns its victims for their insurance money.

The bodies of drowned men, all elderly, wealthy foreigners with no relatives in the UK, keep being hauled out of the Thames. While the first seemed like an accident – the victim’s wallet still being full – the fourth in as many months offers a challenge to statistical probability and suggests that something more sinister may be afoot…

Vohrer’s direction is, in itself, nothing to be ashamed of. It’s brisk and efficient and contains enough self-conscious stylish moments and images without becoming self-indulgent. But there’s also little he hasn’t done before. Maybe it’s a case of seeking to demonstrate a consistency of authorial voice – the opening credits, after all, proclaim “an Alfred Vohrer film” before anything else – but if so, it’s also one without that vital element of development that Peter Wollen identified as the distinction between the John Ford and Howard Hawks.

Indeed, another element that emerges from the film is precisely that of the rapidly changing social and moral climate of the 1960s basically outstripping (at times literally) the ability of the filmmakers to adapt their material. Thus, for example, whereas 1964’s The Phantom of Soho had featured a brief blink-and-you’ll miss it flash of exposed breast from of its nightclub performers, here the nightclub is wall-to-wall breasts and buttocks; bush was still a no-no though the obscuring literal and metaphorical fig leafs here would soon come off for the later giallo-krimi crossovers, the St Pauli thrillers and the Schulmadchen report cycle alike

Die blaue Hand is a pretty wild movie on its own terms. It crams a lot of bizarre digressions into a mere 74 minutes, not counting some stuff reportedly inserted after the fact by an American distributor. You get a room full of hanging mannequins, a butler who reveals himself as the disgruntled ex-husband of the Emerson materfamilias, and a second inspection of the insane stripper, on top of everything I’ve already mentioned. If Kinski recedes during the story, Karl Lange emerges as an awesome looking villain in the Germanic Caligari tradition of evil asylum keepers, while Diana Koerner makes Myra an appealing heroine. Visually, even in something well short of restored form, Hand looks great in moody, Bava-influenced color, and the admitted datedness of the music is a point in the film’s favor as far as I’m concerned. However faithful he may or may not be to Edgar Wallace, Vohrer came up with a vivid modernized mix of the Mabusian crime tradition and the American “old dark house” style. A film like this was probably campy when it first appeared, but if you can tolerate its absurdities you’ll probably be as entertained by this brisk adventure as I was.
