While many filmmakers (the majority) remained immobile during home confinement, the members of the El Pampero collective did not stop filming… Alejo Moguillansky filmed with his partner, the actress Luciana Acuña, The Middle Ages, while Agustín Mendilaharzu did the same with Constanza Feldman in Clementina…

Clementina is Feldman’s alter-ego, who in the middle of the pandemic settles — in principle provisionally — in the apartment of her boyfriend Guillermo (Mendilaharzu) in the Chacarita neighborhood. The first few minutes are typical of this “subgenre” of COVID times: wearing masks, maintaining social distance, using hand sanitizer, disinfecting food, changing shoes as soon as you enter, earning a living by teaching online or selling homemade bread… The risk of pandemic comedy “fatigue” at this point is evident.

But luckily Clementina, without neglecting the context that conditions everything, then becomes an eccentric comedy about domestic adventures. In the building in general and in the couple’s apartment in particular, all kinds of problems arise: floods, water and electricity cuts, emergency repairs and, thus, in the midst of the restrictions, there is a permanent movement of neighbors, plumbers, and bricklayers, a movement that the Feldman-Mendilaharzu duo works with a choreographic, playful, and artificial sense, resorting to noises that are transformed into musical compositions (on the other hand, the soundtrack by Gabriel Chwojnik and the chosen themes are on the medieval and renaissance side).

If Clementina, with her rather unkempt short hair and abandoned dyeing, is always on screen dealing with the secondary characters (from a bricklayer played by Juan Barberini to a removal specialist with a ridiculous Russian accent played by Laura Paredes), Guillermo is in the background or directly giving instructions from off camera.

Narrated episodically in five parts (it was originally a series designed for the streaming platform Kabinett), Clementina is a muted comedy that bets on provoking a certain strangeness. There is a constant presence of dolls (especially animals) and certain shots in which situations of the order of the fantastic emerge. That going through and coping with a pandemic today may seem realistic, but from an artistic perspective it is not a little epic and dystopian, apocalyptic. And Clementina is a search to record, from an intimate perspective, the tragicomic and absurd elements that an experience of these dimensions and scope generates.

Filmed during the COVID-19 lockdown, the movie is an almost absurd portrait of a family’s dynamic during the pandemic, set in directors Alejo Moguillansky and Luciana Acuña’s home and starring their real-life daughter. The Middle Ages features them taking online courses, trying to work and find moments of solitude in a perpetually full house. In essence, trying to not go completely crazy. Cleo, the 8-year-old star, is the protagonist and the one who copes best with the new crisis, as the story revolves around her trying to collect money to buy a telescope by selling the house’s objects. Moguillansky and Acuña produced a story that’s both relatable and also highly poetical and philosophical, in the playful and comedic fiction/documentary hybrid style they have mastered throughout their previous films.
