This first film adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s play about class distinctions was made in 1955 in the Vienna Rosenhügel studios, but it was only premiered five years later. Curt Bois plays the rich capitalist Puntila who only becomes somewhat agreeable when he is drunk (which he is most of the time in this film). In his inebriated state, Puntila not only gets amorously involved with three different ladies but also suggests that his daughter Eva marries his chauffeur Matti. The chauffeur, however, doesn’t really agree…

While the film is probably less biting than Brecht’s original satire, this is nevertheless a very fine film which only at first glance seems to fit into the standard comedy fare of Austrian and German cinema of the 1950s. Looking closer at its absurd humour, much of it seems more influenced by Rene Clair’s musical comedies of the early 30s, and some scenes might even provide a hint of what was to come with the disrespectful comedies of the Czech New Wave a few years later. In any case, a hilariously funny performance by Curt Bois as Puntila, and excellent direction by Cavalcanti who uses sepia-toned sequences for the Brechtian ‘choruses’ and otherwise always keeps this comedy at a fast pace. Very fine score by the great Hanns Eisler, too. Highly recommended!

Synopsis:
In this gritty film noir, cynical ex-RAF flyer Morgan, bored with civilian life, joins a break-in gang led by Narcy. On his first job, the getaway car crashes after killing a policeman. Morgan is framed as the driver and sent to jail. Seeking revenge, he escapes and heads for London. Along the way he’s helped by a woman (Mrs. Fenshaw), who wants him to murder her husband. In London, Morgan is sheltered by Sally, who falls in love with him. He confronts Narcy and the gang in an abandoned warehouse. Brazilian Director Cavalcanti’s crime drama should not be confused with the totally unrelated “They Made Me a Criminal” (1939).

In the drought areas of Northeastern of Brazil, groups of migrants move trying to find better place to live, at least with water. Some of them go to Recife, to get a vessel to Santos expecting to have a better life in the Southern. In the poor area of Recife, an old washerwoman launders clothes to survive and support her family. Her husband Zé Luis, a former sailor, is crazy due to a hit of the boom of a mast on his head. Her older son Raimundo works in a grocery and selling mangoes on the street, trying to save money to move to the Southeastern with his girl-friend Aurora. Her daughter wants to be a prostitute to have a better quality of life. Her younger son is seriously sick.
