Le Voyage Imaginaire” is full of suggestions in which different genres are mixed (avant-garde, comedy, surrealism) without any real connection. It’s a really bizarre film that relates the complicated relationship between three bank clerks (and their boss) for the typist girl that works in the same office. Clair creates a dream world which plunges the audience into a universe full of fantasy. There are lady fortunetellers, fairies, classic story characters and even modern heroes such as “Charlot”, not to mention the “Notre Dame” roofs and the museum “Grévin”. It seems to be a kind of deluded fairy tale, extravagant, anxiously exaggerated and very rich in film ideas.

That mixed dream world benefits from using all the special effects known at that time (slow motion, double exposure, optical effects) combined with simple backgrounds that are perfect for the formal aspect of the story. It all creates an unreal atmosphere, incredible and dumbfounding at times. Clair directed a very special film that is thought-provoking and fascinating.

Paris, at the time of the Great Depression. Bastien, a manual worker, persuades his timid friend, Ségard, to leave with him for Canada, to start a new life in a country where, according to the publicity films, everything is possible. The two men arrive in the port of Le Havre, ready to depart on the ocean liner Tenacity. They take lodgings at a boarding house where they both fall under the spell of the charming serving girl Thérèse. When the boat’s departure is delayed, Bastien takes advantage of the hiatus to court Thérèse. One evening, he gets her drunk and lures her into bed with him, without his friend knowing. The next day, Bastien has made up his mind to stay in France with Thérèse…

A nice little (and short) film before all the main Duvivier’s “Avant-guerre” masterworks: “La bandera”, “La belle équipe”, “Pépé le Moko”, “Un carnet de bal”, “La fin du jour”.
With a pre-“Front populaire” mood and wonderful views of industrial, maritime architectures, it’s an interesting simple chronicle with fresh characters and acting, as a draft for “La belle équipe”.

Danielle, Jenny’s daughter, is deserted by her fiancé because of her mother’s life, and finds out the truth ; she confides in Lucien. The two fall in love and decide to go away together. Lucien tells Jenny he is going to break with her, and then is badly injured and taken to hospital after a fight with Benoit. Jenny goes to visit him, and Lucien explains that he is in love with a young lady, whose identity Jenny guesses.
