Director Peter Yates’ (Breaking Away, Bullitt, The Friends of Eddie Coyle) final theatrically released film re-teams with his lead from The Dresser, Albert Finney. Shane Connaughton wrote the screenplay for The Run of the Country and wrote a book about his experience on the set called A Border Diary.

“In a small village on the border of Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland, the relationship between a short tempered policeman and his rebellious son becomes even more strenuous when the young man falls for a ‘wrong’ girl.”

From IMDB:
A highly styled ‘genre’ film which can perhaps be seen as a pastiche of all gangster movies. Tom Reagan is the laconic anti-hero of this amoral tale which is also, paradoxically, a look at morals within the criminal underworld of the 1930s. Two rival gangs vie for control of a city where the police are pawns, and the periodic busts of illicit drinking establishments are no more than a way for one gang to get back at the other. Black humour and shocking violence compete for screen time as we question whether or not Tom, right-hand man of the Irish mob leader, really has a heart.

It’s Prohibition era 1930s as gang wars tear apart the city of gang lord Leo and his lieutenant Tom Regan. Tom is upset when Leo declines underling Johnny Caspar’s request to kill the crooked Bernie. Despite Tom’s objections, Leo thinks he made the right decision because Bernie is Verna’s brother and Verna is Leo’s girl. Unfortunately, Caspar seems to be growing in power and just when Leo needs Tom’s help most Tom admits he’s been fooling around with Verna. Tom is thrown out of Leo’s mob and with nothing else to do he decides to join Caspar. But Tom is also talking to Bernie and Verna, and Caspar’s ruthless henchman Eddie Dane starts to get suspicious. His suspicions rise when Tom is ordered to kill Bernie himself, but no one knows whether or not Tom carried out the order. Leaving Caspar searching for his desired power, Dane searching for answers, Verna searching for her brother and Tom searching for his own heart… if he has one anymore.

Tom Regan is an advisor to Leo, a crime boss in an unnamed Prohibition-era town. When Leo and rival boss Johnny Caspar feud over a bookie who’s been cheating Caspar, Tom tries to keep the peace. Instead he finds himself caught in the middle of a war of ambushes and shifting allegiances where nothing is ever quite what it seems.

Against a background of war breaking out in Europe and the Mexican fiesta Day of Death, we are taken through one day in the life of Geoffrey Firmin, a British consul living in alcoholic disrepair and obscurity in a small southern Mexican town in 1939. The Consul’s self-destructive behaviour, perhaps a metaphor for a menaced civilization, is a source of perplexity and sadness to his nomadic, idealistic half-brother, Hugh, and his ex-wife, Yvonne, who has returned with hopes of healing Geoffrey and their broken marriage.

Synopsis:
Ginley (Albert Finney) is a nightclub bingo caller eager for a career change. On his thirty-first birthday, he advertises himself as a private eye in the newspaper. He dons a trench coat, and begins engaging others in rapid-fire dialogue as if he were Humphrey Bogart, or some Dashiell Hammett creation. Soon after, Ginley is phoned by a fat man, who gives him a package containing a gun, a photograph, and a large sum of money. Eventually Ginley is investigating a case involving smuggling of weapons as well as drugs. Ginley also finds himself at odds with his unsupportive brother, who offers Ginley payment to break off his investigations. Eventually Ginley learns of his brother-in-law’s involvement in the crimes at hand. Ginley faces a series of daunting tasks: solving the crimes, bringing justice to the smugglers (and a murderer), as well as maintaining his safety and sanity in the process.

Cold Lazarus is the companion piece to Karaoke (see our review), and the last work Dennis Potter wrote as he struggled against his fatal illness. While Karaoke can stand on its own, Cold Lazarus is best understood as a companion piece or sequel to it. Donald Feeld, the writer from Karaoke (and, in many respects, Dennis Potter’s alter ego), hints at his own final project in Karaoke, one in which he wishes to combine virtual reality and cryogenics. That, then, is what Potter did here.
Cold Lazarus is set in the year 2368. A group of scientists at a cryogenic laboratory have come close to being able to revive the memories of a preserved brain, projecting it in fits and spurts on a huge screen at the lab. The brain — the mind that they are mining — is, of course, none other than that of Donald Feeld, and therefore many of the memories are actually scenes from Karaoke.
All is not well in the 24th century. To get the mind to reveal its secrets is an expensive proposition, and the ultra-rich Martina Masdon for whom the scientists work isn’t pleased with how her money is being wasted. A friend of Masdon’s, multimedia mogul (president of Uniplanet Total Entertainment) David Siltz, sees a great opportunity here: he sees the memories as marvelous reality-TV (and VR — virtual reality, now available via big headsets), and he tries to get the scientists to work for him (a betrayal Masdon would never permit). There is also a subversive anti-technological group, RON (Reality or Nothing) that sabotages the technologically-dominated world of that time.
In Potter’s dystopia technology, especially media, dominates all. Virtual Reality helmets and TV are the great escape, while cigarettes and similar substances are outlawed. Society seems little changed, and the caricatures of the wealthy Masdon and the entertainment-mogul Siltz are merely more exaggerated and more powerful versions of stock contemporary figures.
The scientists, led by Emma Porlock, are fascinated by their discovery, but also wary of it. They come to realize that meddling with this mind and decidedly not letting it rest in peace may not be the right thing to do. “We are his torturers,” they come to understand. The memories they see are a varied lot, including scenes from football matches, Feeld’s final days, as well as a horrific sexual assault perpetrated on the young Feeld.
Some of the scientists sympathize (passively and actively) with RON, and there are dangers both in everyday life as well as this particular experiment that begins to attract too much attention.
Tempted to sell out to Siltz, they also have qualms. But, as Siltz reminds them: “your defrosted lump of gristle is going to be plugged into everybody’s TV and VR helmet, no matter what !”
Potter tells a decent story, but much of it is too simplistic. Evil is presented in unbelievable caricature, and the 24th century resembles a 1950s vision of it (looking even worse in the TV version). There are some good points, and some genuine drama, but it is also a somewhat messy script. It is a good enough read, but not Potter in top form. The highpoints are the interplay between Feeld and the scientists — Potter gets some of this just right — but much of the rest is over the top and undermines what Potter tried to accomplish.

This period piece by Polish director Agnieszka Holland is one of her most successful Hollywood ventures. It’s the second film adaptation of the Henry James novel, but strikes a very different, more feminist and acutely observed, note than William Wyler’s The Heiress, its gaudy 1949 predecessor.

Catherine (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is the plain and socially awkward daughter of wealthy Dr Austin Sloper (Albert Finney). Sloper came into his fortune by marrying a rich woman whose death giving birth to Catherine has permanently embittered him against her.

The young woman grows up in pre-Civil War Manhattan convinced of her unattractiveness and lack of any prospects, marital or otherwise. She is looked after by her widowed Aunt Lavinia, played by Maggie Smith as if she was born to the role, who is the doctor’s sister but in contrast to him is incurably romantic. Catherine is devoted to her father and craves his affection; he in turn treats her as a kind of useful but uninteresting domestic servant.

Into this bleak scene arrives the dashing and well-bred but impoverished Morris Townsend (Ben Chaplin), who meets Catherine at a party and in short order sweeps her off her feet. Under the influence of this unexpected passion, in which she receives support from her flighty aunt, Catherine’s personality and sense of self-worth visibly blossom.

Dr Sloper, however, is implacably opposed to the match. He is convinced, as someone who himself was once in the same position, that Morris is a fortune-hunter with no real interest in the daughter he views with such disdain. But is the doctor being honest in his motive for rejecting Morris? There is an unspoken awareness that the challenge to his position of absolute dominance over his daughter must also be a factor.

Catherine is thrust into the uncomfortable position of having to navigate between the force of her attraction to Morris and her filial obligations to her father. She knows it’s possible her father might be right, even if for the wrong reasons, but at the same time she owes it to herself not to throw away this opportunity to make her own life…

David Armstrong in the San Francisco Examiner wrote:
The eternal triangle – love, money and duplicity – frames director Agnieszka Holland’s stylish and ultimately moving film…Although set in upper-crust Manhattan in the 1850s, the story could be set anywhere, anytime people covet wealth and status enough to lie for it.

Bob Satuloff in FilmJournal International wrote:
Washington Square is painstakingly produced, dramatically compelling, and acted with skill and intensity…What gives [it] its contemporary resonance is its framing as a coming-of-age story. It’s obvious early on that Catherine is going to suffer terribly at the hands of her father, the man she loves, and the companion who lives through her vicariously. Whether she’ll emerge from the wreckage with dignity and peace of mind or become a bitter, defeated victim is the question that drives the movie and imbues it with power.
