“Intimate Enemies” is a movie you’ve seen before, when it was set on the Apache reservation or in the Vietnamese jungle. This time the naïve lieutenant, the jaded sergeant, the suicidal mission with no purpose — all the components of the restless-natives combat movie — are applied to the war in Algeria in the late 1950s.

Florent Emilio Siri, an action specialist whose previous credits include the Bruce Willis vehicle “Hostage” and a Tom Clancy video game, knows how to stage and frame a battle, and for about an hour “Intimate Enemies” is taut and satisfying. A new officer, Terrien (Benoît Magimel), takes over a French and Algerian platoon posted near the “forbidden zone.” Patrols are sent out and ambushed, villages are torched, and rebel prisoners are tortured. The Algerian soldiers (who could be the troops from Rachid Bouchareb’s 2006 World War II film “Indigènes,” 15 years older) agonize over their loyalties. The random death and drunken camaraderie are beautifully photographed, in the Moroccan mountains, by Giovanni Fiore Coltellacci.

The movie goes flat, though, when Mr. Siri and his co-writer, Patrick Rotman, shift their attention from the action to the moral math of guerrilla warfare. While they don’t take sides, they can’t resist turning the increasingly unhinged Terrien and his sergeant, Dougnac (Albert Dupontel), into metaphors, which turns the movie into something all too familiar.

This absorbing and intimate portrait of an ordinary town doctor is characteristic of Michel Deville’s cinema: sombre, slow moving, filled with humanity, and unashamedly naturalistic.

Albert Dupontel is captivating as the film’s central character, Dr Sachs, conveying not just the sense of ennui of a man who is locked into a life he no longer appreciates, but also his yearning for some kind of release, for the fulfilment that has so far eluded him. It is an underplayed, introspective, spiritual kind of film, focused exclusively on Sachs’ daily routine and his matter-of-fact interactions with his patients. The repetitive nature of the consultations, the drab colour scheme and the dreary locations do weigh the film down by they emphasise the sense of aching emptiness that is apparently pushing Sachs towards self-destruction.

The does film somehow ends on an optimistic note – Sachs finds someone to take care of his “ailment” and his life is given the meaning that it had previously lacked. In some ways, it is just a conventional love story, but it is told in the most unconventional way, through the understated feelings of believable characters, and bled from the tacit realism of everyday situations.

SYNOPSIS
Jessica (Cécile de France) has moved from the provinces to Paris to start a new life, inspired by her grandmother, Madame Roux (Suzanne Flon), who “always loved luxury”. In Paris, she gets a job waitressing in a small café, the Bar des Théâtres, in spite of the fact that the café has never hired female waitstaff. The owner hires Jessica only because he is expecting large crowds soon and needs staff. The café is in an area of Paris close by several artistic venues, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and a concert hall, on Avenue Montaigne. One of the backstage staff at the theatre, Claudie (Dani), helps to welcome Jessica to Paris. While working at the café, Jessica meets a number of people who have all devoted their lives to their art:an actress who has been pigeonholed by her role in a popular TV soap opera and who yearns to do more artistically rewarding work, a world-renowned pianist who wants nothing more than to share his playing with those who would appreciate it least, and to get away from formal classical music concerts and an art collector who has decided to sell off his collection at the end of his life. All three face pivotal turning points in their lives on the same night, with Jessica as a thread between all three.
