Private Standa Urban is one of a group of disappointed soldiers who had been planning to go on leave from a military airfield. He is supposed to be having an important meeting with his great love Jana, who has come to the nearest little town to see him. They have not seen each other for some time and Standa is afraid for the relationship. Unfortunately a second-degree alert has been sounded and the soldiers are not allowed to leave the garrison. The unhappy Standa volunteers for guard duty. Captain Pazourek seems very severe but in fact he is an understanding man. He sends an ambulance with two nurses, Veleba and Rejman, for the girl, and they secretly smuggle her into the sick bay. The attractive blonde becomes the centre of unwanted attention from the soldiers, and before his friends have found Standa, she has become disgusted with the whole adventure.

This 1965 military-themed love story from director Zbyněk Brynych is based on a short story by Milan Uhde. Soldier Standa Urban is unable to attend a date with his girlfriend due to an emergency at the airport. The lovers have been separated for a long time, and the understanding captain Pazourek permits the date to take place in secret – in the army’s infirmary. But the lovers’ date still faces plenty of obstacles… Standa is portrayed by Josef Čáp. However, for audiences, DAMU theatre school student Jaroslava Obermaierová’s portrayal of Jana served as the main attraction. Thanks to (for the time) several sexually explicit scenes, the debuting 19-year-old actress achieved the status of a 1960s-era sex symbol.

Synopsis:
Transport from Paradise is set in an unusual World War II concentration camp. The lax Nazi guards permit their Jewish prisoners to roam freely about the camp and conduct their own business and social affairs, without the threat of instant extermination looming over their heads. The prisoners’ main fear is that they may at any moment be shipped off to one of the death camps. In the film’s incredibly heartbreaking climax, a group of prisoners willingly board a train to Auschwitz, laboring under the delusion that they are being sent to another “paradise” camp at the behest of the Council of Jewish Elders. Though it stretches credibility at times, Transport from Paradise is purportedly based on a true story.

Seventeen and Anxious was also released as O Happy Day. The film’s alternate title is a reference to a popular gospel song, which is performed often in the course of the action. The film’s official title alludes to the coming of age experienced by its youthful protagonists. The younger actors are green but eager to please, while the veterans in the supporting cast-including Nadja Tiller and Karl Michael Vogler-help make the film palatable for those among us not politely inclined to nervous teenagers. The film’s R rating is admittedly necessary, but should not suggest that the film is overtly offensive.

Synopsis:
Dr. Braun is forbidden to practice medicine because he’s a Jew living in Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia. He’s old, seems resigned about the fate of the Jews, and even works in the Department of Confiscation of Jewish Property. One day a neighbor asks him to assist a wounded political fugitive. Dr. Braun reluctantly operates to remove the bullet, but warns that plenty of morphine will soon be needed in order to keep the man from screaming when he awakes, which would attract unwanted attention. After some soul searching, Dr. Braun decides to redeem himself and reclaim his identify as a person and doctor by continuing to provide assistance. His search for the scarce morphine takes him on a nightmarish journey which includes a brothel where local women are forced to be prostitutes for German soldiers, a bar where the locals try to drown their misery in booze and dancing, and a Jewish insane asylum with a high suicide rate. Review:
Made during the onset of the Czech New Wave, this powerful tale of personal responsibility is informed as much by Cold War paranoia – and Czech resistance to Soviet impositions – as it is by the torments of the Nazi era. Unquestionably of the ’60s in design and scoring, and set chiefly in a single apartment block, the film details the attempts of a Jewish doctor to obtain morphine for an injured resistance figure under police investigation. His internal discussions about when and how one is compelled to help, given his own imminent difficulties, are profoundly moving. Stylised and in places absurdist, with visits to an asylum and a decadent party, it’s a striking portayal of a society in moral meltdown, where ‘hate’s terribly contagious’. The doctor’s final act is an absolute attempt to draw a line in the sand against this, and a final measure of commitment to the greater good.
