This profound and disturbing Italian documentary is entirely comprised of archival film footage from London, Milan, Moscow, Vienna and Budapest of life in WWI prison camps. Some of the clips are from propaganda films from Germany and Czarist Russia. The compilers removed all original onscreen text and replaced it with title cards describing the location and the subject. The documentary is also unnarrated but for a vocal score and presents the subjects objectively. Scenes include the arrest of the prisoners, their entry into the prison camps, live within their confines and the grim fate suffered by many of the interred

After stumbling upon a treasure trove of archival footage in the early ’80s, the pair turned to distorting past records, altering their found footage with tinted colors and speed variations, and even rephotographing them to make them even murkier. Case in point: In Prisoners of War’s deluge of images from Czarist Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the long takes of Russian soldiers marching en masse through an Austrian prison camp come to resemble a river, a vivid metaphor for people dehumanized by war.

LEAD: To watch ”From the Pole to the Equator” is to feel that one has seen a ghost – many ghosts, human and animal, from places all over the globe. The spectral quality of this documentary is overwhelming. Two Italian film makers, Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, have drawn upon turn-of-the-century film from regions that were then fabulously exotic – the Arctic, India, Africa and less remote but equally striking settings in the Dolomites and the Caucasus – and assembled it at a sleepwalker’s pace, with changeable color tints and a humming electronic score.

To watch ”From the Pole to the Equator” is to feel that one has seen a ghost – many ghosts, human and animal, from places all over the globe. The spectral quality of this documentary is overwhelming. Two Italian film makers, Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi, have drawn upon turn-of-the-century film from regions that were then fabulously exotic – the Arctic, India, Africa and less remote but equally striking settings in the Dolomites and the Caucasus – and assembled it at a sleepwalker’s pace, with changeable color tints and a humming electronic score. The result offers haunting glimpses of a world in the process of being conquered.

”From the Pole to the Equator,” which opens today at the Film Forum 1, draws upon the film archives of Luca Comerio (1874-1940), a pioneer of documentary film making who traveled widely and often recorded the interaction of people and animals; indeed, the abundant animal footage here is the contemporary film makers’ most chilling material.

The killing of a polar bear by Arctic explorers is recorded in elaborate detail (the score, by Keith Ullrich and Charles Anderson, makes such events especially chilling). And later on, African tribesmen gather around a felled rhinoceros to remove its horns as a trophy for visiting white hunters. The animal’s blood flowing in slow motion is incomparably eerie, as are other scenes in which captured or killed animals are offered up for the camera to examine. Surely Mr. Comerio had his own keen sense of the brutal effects wrought by European visitors in the areas he filmed, and Mr. Gianikian and Miss Ricci Lucchi heighten it even further. Their film ends with a cozy family scene of a well-dressed couple – we know nothing more about them, since there is no narration – playfully letting dogs have their way with a captive rabbit.

The archival footage used here also captures the quotidian life of far-flung regions, and ”From the Pole to the Equator” gives this a dreamlike quality: uniformed African children being taught to make the sign of the cross, European women peering at a train going by, white-suited Indians walking a broad, shady avenue. The slow, sleepy quality of these images, only a shade more mobile than still photography, freezes them in the viewer’s memory. The smallest, most ordinary gestures become indelible, like the sight of one Indian child grooming the hair of another. The first girl stares at the camera with the look of wonder, the self-consciousness and the trace of apprehension that seemed to greet Mr. Comerio in every setting.

Mr. Gianikian and Miss Ricci Lucchi create a subtle and disturbing momentum as they coax their film toward its concluding images of soldiers in combat. Some of these scenes are presented as tinted negatives, so scores of pale pink phantoms clamber over magenta hillsides on their way to destruction. This technique is as effective as it is unusual, and it creates a one-of-a-kind documentary of rare, insinuating power. I diari di Angela – Noi due cineasti. Capitolo secondo recounts in the first place our private lives, revealing what we went through while the movies we were making–on the violence of war, on colonialism and fascism—took shape. The film draws on the writings of soldiers, the wounded and prisoners of war. The passages describe some of the battle sites and the boundaries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and show us the face and the acute gaze of Freya Stark at Asolo, as well as reminding us of the unmistakable voice of Walter Chiari in Soviet Armenia. In those years at the same time as the Trilogia della guerra we were working on a large installation called La marcia dell’uomo. Then we devoted ourselves to the Trittico del Novecento, begun in 2002 and finished in 2008 for the Mart in Rovereto. Among the many themes explored were the end of the Second World War, hunger and the economic miracle. In the new film lay the essence of our artistic, historical and political mission. The promise made to Angela was renewed and still shines through the impassioned writing of her pages that pass without barriers through the narrow and dark eye of the needle of a violent world.

Every day of her life, Angela kept a diary, filled with words and drawings, in which she recorded public and private matters, meetings, things she had read, everything. Including the account of two trips to Russia (1989-90). The period of the collapse of the USSR. A diary that she had been keeping in small Chinese notebooks, since before Dal Polo all’Equatore (1986), on our uninterrupted work on the violence of the 20th century. From our tours in the United States with the “scented films” of the late seventies to the Anthology Film Archive of New York and the Berkeley Pacific Film Archive… Now I reread these diaries and see again the film-diary of all those years. I am alone now, after many years of life and artistic work together. I took her up into the Eastern Alps, which she loved and where we used to walk together. Angela comes back to life for me in the handwritten words, jotted down with a light touch, that accompanied her drawings, her watercolors, rolls of paper stretching for tens of meters. I look at our private, forgotten films. Recordings that lie behind our work of reinterpreting the documentary film archives and giving them new meaning. Everyday life, made up of simple things, the people we felt close to who accompanied us on our journeys, our research in the world of stock footage, a trip to Soviet Armenia with the actor Walter Chiari. Testimonies that we gathered over the course of time.
