Black-and-white Sven Nykvist cinematography highlights this Woody Allen comedy about fame and obscurity among Manhattan celebs. Journalist Lee Simon (Kenneth Branagh), makes a play for actress Nicole Oliver (Melanie Griffith), subject of his current story. Lee is separated from his wife Robin (Judy Davis), a schoolteacher who’s totally lost and insecure — until TV producer Tony Gardella (Joe Mantegna) becomes fascinated with her. Concerned about her possible sexual inadequacies, Robin recruits a prostitute (Bebe Neuwirth) to instruct her on oral sex techniques. On the town, Lee becomes transfixed by a blond supermodel (Charlize Theron), who teases him throughout the night, eventually dropping him before they get home. Lee’s relationship with book editor Bonnie (Famke Janssen) is solid, and she’s due to move into his place. However, he suddenly becomes romantically involved with waitress-actress Nola (Winona Ryder), complicating his agreement with Bonnie. Lee’s efforts to sell his screenplay take him to the Stanhope Hotel, where he arrives just as spoiled young movie star Brandon Darrow (Leonardo DiCaprio) is fighting with his girlfriend (Gretchen Mol), trashing his hotel room, and insulting hotel staffers. When Darrow and his entourage head off to Atlantic City, Lee tags along, but as life swirls about him, a dismal dawn awaits. In addition to the Stanhope, locations included Barbetta’s Restaurant, Ziegfeld Theatre, Soho’s Serge Soroko Gallery, Flamingo Club, Jean-Georges Restaurant, and the Trump Marina Hotel and Casino (donated by Donald Trump, who portrays himself in a cameo at the Jean-Georges). Shown at the 1998 Venice Film Festival, this was the opening night selection of the 1998 New York Film Festival.

Promoted by Woody as “an hour of horny comedy,” the show was refreshingly adult by the standards of 1969 network TV. After wacky animated titles that depicted Allen as an astronaut, a guillotine victim and Virgil Starkwell, his Take The Money & Run character and after the first of 3 very funny Libby’s commercials featuring Tony Randall as detective Justice Dunn, the show opens with the monologue.

This was followed by the first of three hilarious skits that each feature a tall, busty, blonde 23 year old Candice Bergen who shows a true flair for comedy. She and Woody play actors in an off-Broadway drama on the first day of rehearsal.

After two songs by The Fifth Dimension comes the next skit, ‘Cupid’s Shaft’ a great spoof of silent movie comedies where Woody bears an astonishing resemblance to Harold Lloyd. With solo piano by Marvin Hamlisch and hints of Woody’s ‘later/serious’ films (black & white photography, sad ending) it’s a tale of the love that can never be between a street sweeper (Woody) and a rich girl (Candice).

A memorable 9 minutes in TV history followed when the paths of two significant figures in American culture would cross for the first and only time as Woody Allen interviewed Billy Graham.

The show ranks as Woody Allen’s crowing achievement in a medium he explored only briefly.

In 1987, Woody Allen was at the height of his fame and adulation: he had just made one of his most popular and acclaimed films, Hannah and Her Sisters, and his relationship with Mia Farrow was the stuff of very carefully crafted legend. Promoting his new film, September, he was profiled for 60 Minutes talking about his work, his life, Farrow, and the upcoming birth of their first child. Like all 60 Minutes profiles, this one lasted about 20 minutes on air.

The first disc is almost two hours of Morley Safer’s interview with Woody. The second disc is a reading Woody gave at a 1987 PEN Conference. PEN is the International Association of Writers, devoted to creative rights and artistic freedom. At the event, Woody read some previously unpublished work from his notebooks and stories from his published collections, including the private eye spoof “Mr. Big” from the bestseller Getting Even. (A brief clip of the performance was shown on 60 Minutes.)
Although Woody is reading, his panache as a performer is very much present. This performance is the next best thing to his stand-up comedy routines of the 1960s.

The second film to be made from Woody Allen’s successful stage comedy (following a 1969 feature starring Jackie Gleason), Don’t Drink the Water is a made-for-television adaptation directed by and starring Allen himself. The fish-out-of-water premise remains the same: Allen plays Walter Hollander, a caterer from New Jersey who takes his family on vacation to a fictional Eastern European country. The trip turns sour when, thanks to a series of misunderstandings involving some inopportune snapshots, they are accused of espionage. The family goes on the run, taking refuge in the American Embassy. There, with the help of a wily young diplomat, they try to figure out a way to return to America without sparking an international incident. Though this version is set 25 years later than the original film, the changes are mostly cosmetic: the visual style is hand-held and more frantic, and the script replaces numerous references to the Cold War with a few glancing nods to present-day politics. Another notable change, the addition of an opening montage parodying newsreels, was reportedly the result of network pressure after Allen’s initial cut proved too short for the planned time slot.
