Plot Synopsis
In this urban drama, a teenage street punk learns a valuable lesson about the dangers of crime. Jackie Cooper is the tough gangleader with political aspirations. In every prison, a war is being waged for the souls of men. This silent battle between the rogues who want to spread their evil and the devoted men who seek to rebuild prisoners’ lives explodes when a new convict arrives at the state pen. After forging a check to help his mother, Johnny Gate is sentenced to one to fourteen years. The prison chaplain, Father Joe, recognizes his good intentions and tries to steer Johnny on the right course. Unfortunately, his bunkmate Red Manson thinks Father Joe’s special attention could be exploited into a jailbreak. Red threatens to murder Johnny if he doesn’t cooperate, forcing him to choose between death and the path to redemption. Martin Mooney’s compelling story is based on his own time in jail and is dedicated to the real-life prison chaplain who helped him during his incarceration. .

“This is a fine time to be law-abiding!” An awesome little Christmas-set film noir produced by Monogram, about a tap dancer whose shoes, thrown out the window at a screeching cat, leave footprints at a murder crime scene, circumstantial evidence set to clasp handcuffs around his wrists. With a screenplay by Steve Fisher from a Cornell Woolrich novel, the dialogue is top-tier snappy noir dialogue, and the film’s extended waltz on the high cost of living up to the standards of postwar America’s “mysterious prosperity” adds genuinely affecting thematic oomph. Interestingly, it opens much like Hugo Fregonese’s Black Tuesday, a track back and forth along prison cells while our lead frets hours before his execution. “What a rotten way to make a living.” One of the great B noirs, one of the great anti-Christmas movies, and, without question, the greatest shoe movie ever made.

The first picture released by the reformed Monogram Pictures Corporation, which was temporarily shelved from 1935-37 when its two owners, Trem Carr and W. Ray Johnston, joined with Mascot Pictures’ Nat Levine and another independent studio,
Liberty Pictures, to form Republic Pictures with Herbert J. Yates (owner of Consolidated Film Industries, a film processing laboratory) at the old Mack Sennett studio. The partnership held for a year until Carr and Johnston, chafing under the autocratic rule of Yates, left the company in 1937 and reformed Monogram. This is the first of a remarkable 20 features the studio would release that year. Monogram would always remain a low-budget outfit, its product geared for rural audiences and second-run theaters. In 1952 it changed its name to Allied Artists, hoping to erase the low-budget “stigma” associated with Monogram. (imdb)

While Joel and Mark are at sea Mark is abandoned in Singapore by the Ship’s Mate Finch who, upon their return, convinces the townspeople that Joel abandoned his brother. Joel escapes jail, takes the ship to Singapore, finds his brother insane with drink and returns him to the ship. There is a mutiny.
