When a Red Army detachment captures Sultan Mazar, the brains behind the Bazmachi contingent, a decision is made to escort urgently the prisoner to the Bukhara province. The difficult mission is entrusted to a grizzled mountain trapper and conscientious revolutionary called Mirzo. His expertise is essential to traverse the precarious paths and steep mountain ridges along the way, impossible terrain for the inexperienced. A group consisting of Mirzo, his brother Kova, the Sultan, his daughter Zaranghis and slave Saifulla set off on this journey, pursued doggedly along the way by Fattobeck, the ruthless new head of the Basmachis. They are forced to fight on the mountain ridges as well as negotiate the natural dangers and harsh elements.

Plot:
Infirm Thomas Felton (Leslie Daniels) tells his young wife Samantha (Rosalba Neri) that
he wants his nephew Johnny Yuma (Mark Damon) to run their ranch. Samantha responds by having her brother Pedro (Louis Vanner/Luigi Vannucchi) bump Felton off. She then blames a fall-guy for Felton’s death and employs her ex-lover-cum-bounty killer, Lawrence Jerome Carradine (Lawrence Dobkin), to shoot the patsy down. When it transpires that Felton has actually willed the ranch to his nephew, Samantha instructs both Carradine and Pedro and his men to eliminate Johnny.

An itinerant preacher and his wife and daughter rescue a Mexican boy who is the sole survivor of a massacre perpetrated by southern slaveowner. The boy grows up into Lou Castel as the daughter who becomes Barbara Frey, who’s like a sister to him now, wanders off into the moral morass of this film’s depiction of the west to become somewhat like a sex slave in one of the tawdriest saloons ever put on screen. Into this depravity wanders Castel in search of the daughter, his sister, and which leads him to Mark Damon, the evil southerner, who basically owns a town and employs a small army of enforcers, one of whom is a blond Franco Citti who kind of resembles Klaus Kinski. It just gets more twisted as it progresses, with a mesmerizing “drink and shoot” contest between Castel and Damon. It’s the twisted Damon’s idea. This guy has to be seen. He looks like Deracula himself. Riz Ortolani provided a minimal score, a lot of which is single notes on an acoustic guitar with some rhythmic accompaniment, that goes well with everything, especially the bleak desert-like physical environmnet. It’s got everything, racism, sexism, spirituality, some truly imaginative use of guns, and a thread that holds it together.

Don Murray stars as a humble cowboy with aspirations for bigger things. He borrows money from his dance-hall girlfriend Lee Remick to buy a ranch, then dumps Remick in favor of banker’s daughter Patricia Owens. Murray runs for political office, and in so doing is compelled to join a posse in search of his best friend Stuart Whitman, who has turned rustler. Anxious not to compromise his climb to the top, Murray stands by in silence as Whitman is lynched. In the end, however, Murray regains his essential decency when he is shot while trying to protect his ex-girlfriend Remick from bullying land baron Richard Egan. Based on a novel by A. B. Guthrie Jr., These Thousand Hills may look and sound like a western, but it has “film noir” written all over it. – Hal Erickson

A good and somewhat unusual Western that at times seems to be channeling the spirit of film noir, These Thousand Hills nevertheless falls short of being the great film it wants to be. Again, Hills is a good film, definitely worth watching — but just as definitely not a great film. Part of the problem is that Hills seems to want to be a frontier epic, but it simply lacks the size and the grandeur that is required. Sure, there are wide open spaces and some panoramic vistas, but they feel like “extras” rather than an integral, necessary component of Hills. The story keeps trying to be bigger and grander, but at heart it’s small — a story about the soul of a man, rather than the soul of the country. As that man, Don Murray is part of the problem. His performance is fine, more than perfectly acceptable and effective — but at the same time, less than soul-searching. The actor is playing a role rather than being the character, and that discrepancy is noticeable. As his real love, Lee Remick is exceptional, a performance that is quietly luminous. Stuart Whitman is very good as Murray’s buddy and Richard Egan does well with the rather-on-enote role of the heavy. Richard Fleischer’s direction is professional and at times imaginative; if he lacks the vision to make Hills the bigger picture it wants to be, he stills turns out an engaging and at times intriguing character study.

A peace-loving, part-time sheriff in the small town of Firecreek must take a stand when a gang of vicious outlaws takes over his town.

Roger Ebert wrote:
The Jimmy Stewart hero usually isn’t very happy with his job. He doesn’t go around sticking his neck out. He’s no John Wayne type. But finally he gets pushed beyond the breaking point and Wayne hath no fury like a Stewart scorned.

“Firecreek” presents the Stewart hero in a familiar disguise. This time, Jimmy is the part-time sheriff of a town populated with broken-down, defeated settlers. He gets two bucks a month and wears a “Sharaf” badge his kids have hammered out of tin. His wife is expecting another baby any minute now, and the last thing he wants is trouble.

But then a gang of bad guys rides into town. At first you don’t realize they’re bad guys, because they’re led by Henry Fonda, who always plays good guys. He does this time, too. That is, he’s not as bad as the guys in his gang. He’s an essentially decent person on the wrong side, like Rommel in the desert.

But he’s been wounded, and while he’s being tended by a kindly landlady (Inger Stevens), his boys shoot up the town. Stewart, pushed beyond the proverbial breaking point, fights back. There’s a shootdown in the great Western tradition, ending at last with the confrontation of reluctant heroism (Stewart) and reluctant evil (Fonda), both wear gray hats, appropriately.

“Firecreek” was obviously conceived with high aims. I have the feeling that the people involved thought they were making a pretty good movie. And they almost did. Several scenes, including one between Stewart and his pregnant wife (Jacqueline Scott), and another between Fonda and Miss Stevens, are filled with tenderness.

But somehow the parts don’t quite come together. Despite the presence of character actors like the legendary Ed Begley, despite the effective dust-blown photography, despite Stewart and Fonda, something is missing.

The tension we need to draw us into the story isn’t there; things move at too leisurely a pace, and the movie, like the Jimmy Stewart hero, has to be dragged into the excitement against its will.

Sam Shepard’s revisionist 1994 Western, the final release featuring late actor River Phoenix, combines elements of baroque Japanese ghost films like Onibaba with traditional stylistic conventions of John Ford.

Storyline:
It’s 1873, Indian Territory. Talbot Roe is going mad with grief over losing his Indian wife, Awbonnie. In an effort to save him, his father, Prescott Roe, seeks to purchase the dead wife’s sister, Velada, from the same traveling carnival he acquired Awbonnie. The girls’ father, carnival master Eamon McCree, is willing to do business, but her step-brother, Reeves, protests, putting an end to the negotiation. Desperate, Prescott kidnaps Velada and promises her the means to be rid of her father in return for comforting Talbot out of his obsession. In Talbot’s madness, he guards his wife’s corpse, preventing her from passing to the beyond. As a result, Awbonnie’s ghost begins haunting and cursing everyone involved in the transaction of selling her as a wife. Meanwhile, Reeves and Eamon search the prairie for Velada…
