On 8 December 1944, a number of Frisian resistance fighters raided a prison in Leeuwarden and, without loss of blood, freed dozens of prisoners, among them several leaders of the Leeuwarden resistance and a police inspector. For some of the prisoners, severely weakened by torture, the raid came just in time. “The Silent Raid” paints a sober and unromantic picture of this heroic deed.

The film, made by Paul Rotha and Kees Brusse, who worked on the film as a dialogue director and actor, was an immediate box office hit. Within weeks a million people had seen the film. The press called “The Silent Raid” the best post-war Dutch film. It was also successful internationally.
