Description:
Six juvenile delinquents are subjected to a social experiment by the authorities, who place them in a home in the inner city of Stockholm. Krister is a naive young social worker who is assigned to observe their behaviour; he believes in the goodness of man and that everybody can change their ways. The overall supervisor and mind behind the experiment is a middle-aged man refered to as the Inspector. He represents the hypocracy of the system, and is also the one who eventually goes on to rape one of the boys.

The experiment is one of observation: the boys are free to go wherever they want and whenever they want as long as they reside in the home that was appointed to them by the authorities. As the days go by, we get to follow them into a life of cheap thrills and petty crimes. But what could have been the start of a friendship between them, soon enough escalates into anarchy and meaningless cruelty.

The title of the film is a quote from the Bible that reads — “Then St. Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven.” — Seventy times seven being 490, this film is about the unforgivable 491 sin.

Set in Sweden in 1782. Jacob, a young nobleman (Per Oscarsson) returns from France to his home and cherished sister Charlotte (Bibi Andersson) who is engaged to Baron Alsmeden (Jarl Kulle). The siblings close relationship becomes incestuous and with fear that the disclosure of Charlotte’s pregnancy will make society view them as libertines, the lovers ultimately choose to part. Jacob decides to leave the country and Charlotte is left to marry the Baron, but it is too late to prevent the final tragedy.

Halvar Björks acting in this film must be one of the best ever performed in Swedish film. The film is still very interesting to see. People who can´t appreciate films about persons who are not as superficial and conventional as themselves will of course have some troubles with this film.
