A stranger comes to work at widow Halla’s farm. Halla and the stranger fall in love, but when he is revealed as Eyvind, an escaped thief forced into crime by his family’s starvation, they flee and become two of the many outlaws of Iceland’s mountains.

Holk, an unemployed mans wife is taken ill. He must find food for her. He goes out poaching on the manors hunting grounds, succeeds in shooting a grouse, but the shot is heard by the forester. During his flight Holk is caught by the forester. During their fight Holk’s rifle accidentally goes off and kills the forester. Terrified, Holk leaves the place leaving his rifle behind.

With no where to go, she marries a man who disgusts her. Her new home is a small shack with the wind and the sand constant companions. When it is necessary for most of the men to go out into the sand storm, one stays back to have his way with Letty and that costs both of them.

So says the legend that drives The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen), directed by the father of Swedish cinema, Victor Sjöström (The Wind), about an alcoholic, abusive ne’er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. Based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, this extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects.

A beautiful story of love, that reminded me of Greta Garbo’s “Anna Christie”. I loved Vilma Bankee’s voice and accent. I felt that the film was charming in it’s “innocence” and simplicity, while dealing with a very complex issue. I hope that I may someday see it again.

Vilma Banky was a famous silent film star, brought over from Hungary in the mid-20s by Sam Goldwyn. She was an instant star in films like THE EAGLE with Rudolph Valentino and THE WINNING OF BARBARA WORTH with Ronald Colman. Her talkie debut was in 1929 in THIS IS HEAVEN; it was a notorious flop. A LADY TO LOVE would be Banky’s final American film and her second attempt at a talkie. And it’s a very good film indeed.

Banky plays a waitress in San Francisco who is spotted by an immigrant grape grower (Edward G. Robinson) who has come to the city to find a wife. He brings the waitress to Napa for an arranged marriage but she is immediately attracted to Robinson’s foreman (Robert Ames). Although Robinson has fallen and broken is leg, the wedding takes place (she wants a home and things) but on their wedding night, Banky has a fling with Ames.

Ames then goes away and leaves Banky with Robinson. She nestles into her newfound safe haven and takes care of Robinson. Over a period of a few months she discovers she has fallen in love with the doting Robinson, but then Ames returns and threatens to make trouble.

Robinson (in his third talkie)is, as always, a total pro. And even with an Italian accent and a wild white white, he’s a pleasure to watch. Ames is OK in the thankless part of the cad. Supporting players include Henry Armetta and George Davis as foolish workers, Anderson Lawler as the doctor, Lloyd Ingraham as the priest, and Richard Carle as the postman.

But Banky is front and center here as Lena. Much was made of her failure in talkies because of her thick accent. After this film flopped she made a couple films in Europe and retired from the screen. But I was struck throughout this film at what a nice voice she had and how much her accent resembled that of Greta Garbo in ANNA Christie that same year. THIS IS HEAVEN is apparently a lost film so we may never be able to judge Banky’s talkie debut. But her second effort is solid.

The best scene in the film is where Banky attempts to give Robinson a bath while he’s in bed (with a broken leg). It’s a giddy and delightful scene, especially with his aversion to water.

Banky was long married to silent star Rod La Rocque. He continued in talkies as a supporting player through the early 1940s.

Lon Chaney stars in He Who Gets Slapped (1924), the first movie made entirely under the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer banner, and the first to feature the MGM lion. It was also Irving Thalberg’s first “all-star” production at the studio, where the young executive had just assumed the position of first vice president and supervisor of production under studio head Louis B. Mayer. The film is based on Russian dramatist Leonid Andreyev’s play, a circus melodrama about a sad clown who falls in love with a beautiful bareback rider who, in turn, loves her performing partner.

Thalberg, who had promoted Chaney to stardom at Universal Pictures, brought the “man of a thousand faces” with him to his new studio to play the tragic clown. He Who Gets Slapped was Chaney’s first film at MGM, where he would continue a lucrative association until his death in 1930.

The film marked the American debut of Swedish director Victor Seastrom. Thalberg cast John Gilbert as the male horseback rider and Norma Shearer, in her first prestigious assignment at MGM, as the object of Chaney’s unrequited affection. Within a few years, Shearer would become Thalberg’s wife and, perhaps not entirely coincidentally, the studio’s reigning female star.

The role of Paul Beaumont, a scientist who becomes a clown after being humiliated in his original profession, is considered one of Chaney’s greatest acting opportunities. The actor himself would recall the part as one of his favorites. He would again play the clown with a broken heart in Laugh, Clown, Laugh (1928). He Who Gets Slapped was shot in 37 days at a cost of $172,000 and earned about $349,000 — not a bad return at the time for a film of offbeat subject matter from a fledgling studio. It was critically acclaimed and was named one of the 10 best films of 1924 by The New York Times, which stated that, “For dramatic value and a faultless adaptation of a play, this is the finest production we have yet seen.”

Of the star performance, the Times reviewer wrote that “Never in his efforts before the camera has Mr. Chaney delivered such a marvelous performance as he does as this character. He is restrained in his acting, never overdoing the sentimental situations, and is guarded in his make-up.”
