The three films directed by Valerio Zurlini at Titanus—Violent Summer, Girl with a Suitcase and Family Diary—were products of a fruitful collaboration interrupted by Titanus’ financial crisis of the mid-1960s. The Professor marked the reunion of director and studio after a decade in which Zurlini was only able to make two films. Here he returns to his trademark style: sober melodrama involving complex characters. The focus is on the title figure, a teacher—played by Alain Delon—who arrives for a temporary position in Rimini in the midst of a midlife crisis. Unable to face his depressive mistress, he spends his nights drinking and gambling as a mutual attraction develops between him and one of his students.

Valerio Zurlini returns to familiar territory with The Girl with a Suitcase a film like its predecessor Violent Summer is about an older women falling in love with a younger man. This time around the age gap is even larger as the male character Lorenzo involved in this love triangle is only sixteen. Aida the object of Lorenzo’s affection is a victim who ultimately victimizes Lorenzo. She is willing to take all of gifts even though she knows that she shouldn’t. She also continues to play with his heart long after she discovers he is in love with her. Like a viscous cycle she has now taken over for her abuser Marcello.

Valerio Zurlini ability to capture the essence of a scene is never more apparent then the train scene in which Lorenzo stalks Aida and her male companion. The scene flows effortlessly and it is only appropriate that when they are having lunch that the glass window between them and Lorenzo keeps their discussion private. Claudia Cardinale has worked with some of Italy’s greatest director’s Fellini and Leone. These directors like Zurlini always manage to get great performances out of her despite her limited acting range. A very young looking Jacques Perrin is Lorenzo in the film and his introspective performance is captivating. Gian Maria Volontè has a brief role as Aida’s boyfriend at the train station. The Girl with a Suitcase is a heartbreaking film about hurting the ones you love the most.

Synopsis:

At the height of World War II in fascist Italy, spoiled young Carlo Caremoli enjoys a beach vacation with his friends, oblivious to world events due to the protection provided by his father, Ettore. When Carlo meets older widow and mother Roberta Parmesan, he is smitten despite her reluctance to get involved. “Estate violenta” is a 1959 Italian award-winning black-and-white drama film directed by Valerio Zurlini, depicting a love affair between a prominent Fascists young draft-dodging son, portrayed by Jean Louis Trintignant, and a naval officers widow, older than he, portrayed by Eleonora Rossi Drago. It is set in the Italian seaside resort of Riccione in July 1943, around the time of the dismissal of Benito Mussolini, during the Allied invasion of Sicily in World War II. Estate violenta is Zurlinis second feature film, with which he made his name as a director.

Shot almost entirely on location in Greece in an awesome deep-focus newreel-documentary style black-and-white (with the emphasis on the blacks), `Le Soldattesse’ is the story a group of prostitutes that have been recruited for the military brothels of Italian soldiers during WW II, and the long truck ride they take trying to get to their destinations through a war-torn mountainous area. Three military men of different rank have the job of taking them through, and the relationships they develop with the girls on this trip is the real subject matter of the film. Sublimely beautiful Sixties New-Wave icon Anna Karina plays the most cheerful of the ladies of leisure but there are no real leads in the film, all 5 or 6 of the main characters are given equal screen time and Zurlini never falters once as he draws poetic and hilarous performances full of insights from each character. On a higher level “Le Soldattese” becomes a deep examination of one relatively minor but revealing absurdity (prostitutes being carried to brothels in a war-torn area to boost troop morale) overlapping the bigger, related absurdity of the war itself and Mussolini-era fascism.
