Anna’s marriage collapses due to her husband Pavel’s alcoholism, and she drinks alongside him to hide his shame. While she is away on a business trip, someone sets fire to their apartment. Their young son Alyosha survives but loses his voice from trauma, being the only witness. Police believe the boy knows the arsonist and need him to confront the suspect. Anna works with a child therapist to heal her son, confronts the damage alcohol has done to their family, and finally helps the boy identify the criminal.

On her first day, she meets Ilya (Nikolai Rybnikov), the most popular and attractive guy who is equally known for his success on the working place and with the girls. Ilya makes the bet with the friends that the new cook will fall in love with him in no later than two weeks. Young Tosya, naive, spontaneous, with the huge wide open eyes, absolutely inexperienced in the game of flirting and seduction will teach “the first guy in town” a lesson or two on how to treat the girl and very soon he finds himself desperately in love with her. Along with the main story, there are several sub-plots concerning Tosya’s friends and roommates. The film is called “The Girls”, remember? “Devcahta” is short, only 92 minutes but its characters are well written and acted and the jokes are funny. The nice melodious songs by Aleksandra Pachmutova add to the atmosphere of youth, hope, friendship, and readiness for love that radiate from the screen.

One of the best-known gems of Latvian cinematography and the most distinctive film by the master director Herz Frank. For ten whole minutes, the camera never leaves the face of a young boy watching a puppet show, and through this child’s soul the viewer experiences the struggle between good and evil by observing the boy’s unmediated emotions, which make him ten minutes older, more experienced and emotionally mature.

As one of the finest examples of the Riga School of Poetic Documentary Cinema, this film is pure movement of the soul. The black-and-white work contains not a single spoken word; only the precise, emotionally evocative soundscape and the observant eye of the cinematographer are at work here. Shot in one take, the length of the film was dictated by the technology of the day – one role of 35mm film was exactly ten minutes long. To create the necessary drama for these ten minutes “cut straight out of life”, director Herz Frank (1926–2013) watched several different puppet shows and used a stopwatch to select the most emotionally saturated excerpt. The technical aspects of the filming also required much creativity on the part of cinematographer Juris Podnieks (1950–1992). Ten Minutes Older is still part of the “obligatory repertoire” at many film schools throughout the world.

Crossroad Street is a small street just 800 metres long on the outskirts of the Latvian capital, Riga. Its various inhabitants, each with his or her own destiny, daily life and relationships with the neighbours, form a microcosm of the country during the time of the Awakening. The genuine interest of the film’s creators in the so-called average person earned a number of international awards, including a European Film Award for best documentary in 1989.

Crossroad Street is the quintessence of the method employed by Latvian documentary film classic Ivars Seleckis (1934). He has been filming Latvian people in cities and in the countryside with the same amount of intense interest since the 1960s, acting as both director and cinematographer. Expressive characters, a sincere but slightly self-deprecating narrator and the warm, sensitive attitude of the film’s creators towards the people in it encourage viewers to empathise and take an interest in the destinies of the characters. The film was followed by New Times on Crossroad Street in 1999 and Capitalism on Crossroad Street in 2013, thus forming a documentary cinema-novel.

When a Red Army detachment captures Sultan Mazar, the brains behind the Bazmachi contingent, a decision is made to escort urgently the prisoner to the Bukhara province. The difficult mission is entrusted to a grizzled mountain trapper and conscientious revolutionary called Mirzo. His expertise is essential to traverse the precarious paths and steep mountain ridges along the way, impossible terrain for the inexperienced. A group consisting of Mirzo, his brother Kova, the Sultan, his daughter Zaranghis and slave Saifulla set off on this journey, pursued doggedly along the way by Fattobeck, the ruthless new head of the Basmachis. They are forced to fight on the mountain ridges as well as negotiate the natural dangers and harsh elements.
