Completed in 1955, Momma Don’t Allow was the first film by future feature film directors Karel Reisz and Tony Richardson, each having come from very different backgrounds. Richardson had risen up the ranks through BBC TV, whereas Reisz was programmer of the NFT (National Film Theatre) and author of The Technique of Film Editing, a standard textbook for several decades, so it’s no surprise Momma Don’t Allow is both an editorial experiment and subtle comment on class behaviour within the Wood Green jazz Club in North London.

Filmed over nine evenings, on the surface it’s a montage of dancing youths and young adults while the Chris Barber Band plays straightforward Dixieland jazz. One onscreen performance has partial sync sound, but like many of the Free Cinema efforts on Disc 1, the music is subjugated by images, which in Momma, string together men and women as they finish up their working class jobs, get dolled up, and head out to a jazz club for some dancing and drinking.

On one level, Momma is a snapshot of various youths assembling under one roof to dance, socialize, stare, ogle, posture and blow off steam after a long day in dullsville, but things get a bit more interesting when a group arrive in the chauffeur-driven limo, with the driver grabbing and pocketing the hood ornament for safekeeping. The upper-class girl in the group doesn’t become the doc’s focus, but the filmmakers keep cutting back to her efforts to co-mingle, and one sees a well-off lass blending with the locals, getting a bit tipsy, and being completely outshone by better dancers.

The others maintain actual choreography with their partners, whereas the lass lazily pirouettes with her long and increasingly annoying shawl, and she’s passed on to other men more out of frustration and boredom than anything else. She eventually leaves with her group and heads home in her snazzy sedan, but Reisz and Richardson play with the footage and discreetly comment on the kids, the adults, the Teddy Boys, and the rich folk who manage to find their own satisfaction when at any time outside of the club walls, they’d likely maintain formal class divisions and prejudices.

The doc goes on longer than it should, but the Chris Barber band is decent, and some classic blues tunes give the doc a bit of juice when the montages of sweaty, dancing couples gets a bit tiresome.

Richardson would flip back to TV before directing his feature film debut, Look Back in Anger in 1958, whereas Reisz would direct another youth-centric short, We Are the Lambeth Boys (1958), before making his own feature length splash with the superb ‘angry young man’ film, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning in 1960.

AFTER 11 years of marriage, Charlie Smith (Jack Nicholson) is fed up with living in a dreary trailer with his pretty, bubble-brained, Texas-born wife, Marcy (Valerie Perrine), and with his job as a member of the United States Border Patrol stationed in Los Angeles. During the day, Charlie makes token arrests of docile, mostly frightened, illegal Mexican immigrants, who supply L.A.’s small businesses with below-minimum-wage labor, and then goes home to drink beer and listen to Marcy, who dreams of living in splendor in her very own duplex.

Largely at Marcy’s urging, Charlie transfers to El Paso, where Marcy gets her duplex – ”Look at it! It’s just like the picture said!” – and where life as a border guard is a good deal more active and perilous than the duty in Los Angeles. At night, the Rio Grande, which forms the U.S.-Mexican border at El Paso, teems with poor, desperate, illiterate Mexicans seeking entrance into the land of milk, honey, bigotry and exploitation.

In a very short time, Charlie Smith, up to his ears in bills for such things as patio furnit ure, a plastic swi mming pool and a waterbed so big it would make an ordinary cou ple seasick, falls in with those border guards who supplement their incomes by accepting payoffs from a few recognized importers of Me xican ”wetbacks.”

”The Border,” which opens today at the Rivoli and other theaters, is an angry, brutal melodrama about the plight of the illegal immigrants, about the people who rip them off and about the consequences of Charlie’s crossing of his own border into the alien territory of bribes, beatings, kidnappings and murder.

”The Border” is an odd, not easily categorized movie. Although it has been made with intelligence, is well directed and acted and is in touch with the ways of lower-middle-class American life, it has the sort of predictable outrage and shape of a made-for-television movie. It has suspense but little excitement. Once the people and the situation have been introduced, there’s not a single surprise in the film, nothing of the uncharacteristic sort that differentiates the adequate melodrama from one that is special and memorable.

A chronicle of events that led to the British involvement in the Crimean War against Russia and which led to the siege of Sevastopol and the fierce Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854 which climaxed with the heroic, but near-disastrous cavalry charge made by the British Light Brigade against a Russian artillery battery in a small valley which resulted in the near-destruction of the brigade due to error of judgment and rash planning on part by the inept British commanders.

From IMDB
The opening moments in any production of Hamlet are critical because the audience, assuming they know the play fairly well, will already be asking the ‘How are they going to do…’ question. It’s the ghost. Hamlet senior. What is he going to look like? In a film, it’s an even bigger challenge, because some people watching might expect a special effect. The approach here is a shot of bright light across the young Dane’s face and his voice echoing through the frame. The style of the film is already crystallised. It’s not about the surroundings or set dressing. It’s about the emotion of the piece, the words. In this key moment we are looking in his eyes as he hear’s his fathers words, and that’s a device used throughout the piece.

On first appearance, Nicol Williamson might seem a bit old for the part. Certainly, I’ve seen Claudius’s who look younger. But that does a disservice to his performance, which commands every scene he appears in. His Hamlet is far from mad; he’s using a bluff technique to search for the why’s of his father’s death and how he’s reacting to it. Unusually. in the intimate moments, during the soliloquy’s he’s at his most vulnerable, as though he’s unable to come to terms with these feelings, and only really comes to life when there a peers to relate to.

A very young looking Anthony Hopkins makes a compelling Claudius, who with his gluttony seems like a man who could do wrong. Equally Judy Parfitt passes the test of being attractive enough for a man to kill for even if her skin is worryingly grey. Although not at grey as Ophelia, played by Marianne Faithful who in some shots looks positively black and white, almost as though the trickery of the film ‘Pleasantville’ had been used. Which is a shame because it detracts from rather a good performance.

The production was filmed at The Roundhouse Theatre which explains that use of extreme close up and the complete lack of establishing shots. The lighting absolutely picks up the actors faces, making what settings there are perfunctory. It mustn’t have been a very easy shoot — most of the speeches and scenes are played out in one shots — there is very little editing in places, which allows the text the breath. I’ve seen the play many times and it was a joy on this occasion to hear how much of our language found a basis here.

The main oddity this time are the supporting actors. This is the only Hamlet you’d expect to find Michael Elphick and Angelica Houston standing around in the background, along with Roger Lloyd-Pack popularly known as Trigger in ‘Only Fools and Horses’. The latter is particularly distracting because his face is so familiar and he appears, not only as Ronaldo, but also as a player, one of Laertes friends and a miscellaneous bystander in the duel at the end. One man should not have that many different beards. Also worth noting is the approach to the credits at the end, which are spoken, in a style similar to Truffaut’s ‘Farenheit 451’ over a shot of Hamlet.
