Sushmita is paralysed below her neck while escaping a rape attempt. She is admitted to a private nursing home for neurological handicapped patients run by Dr. Mitra, himself a paraplegic. Here she meets a wide variety of patients. Her case is handled by a young physiotherapist Santu, who works hard and soon she can move her fingers. During the process. Santu and Sushmita fall in love but she won’t hear of marriage till Santu tells her that they can live a normal married life and have children. Santu very dramatically convinces her that she can even work in an office.

Synopsis:
A writer meets five widows on a train to Puri, one of them played by Sharmila Tagore. As the six lives begin to intertwine, the taboos of widowhood emerge; but so, too, does a philosophy of life and hope for the future. The performers collectively won Best Actress at India’s National Film Awards in 1964. Director Tapan Sinha creates another great film of novelistic complexity.

This movie is way ahead of it’s time in depicting society’s attitudes towards widows in India, who were confined to their homes and could never re-marry.

This movie is an adaptation of the novel with the same name by eminent Bengali
writer Samaresh Basu, who wrote this travelogue under his pen name ‘Kalkut’.

SYNOPSIS

From IMDb:
The film is adapted from a story called Hungry Stones by Rabindranath Tagore. A tax collector posted to a small town puts up at a mansion feared by the locals because it is haunted. As time passes he grows more consumed by the mansion and its air of romance, and the spirits that haunt it, especially a beautiful woman.

From the back of the case:
A Tax collector, who is inclined to the works of Ancient art and culture, came to a rural city for his job. But he chooses to live in a haunted house. Another Bengali person from the local village and his colleagues actually informed him about the danger of living in that fort. But the person is basically fascinated by that piece of ancient work. At night he started to meet a dancer and developed a relationship with her. Slowly they beginning to wait for each other and thus they entered in to a relationship. But he then slowly realizes that this is a supernatural phenomenon and that girl is nothing but a ghost. So he tries to stay away from the fort but he cannot resist it.
