An adultery drama set in a bourgeois family in Bamako, Mali, where tensions are rife within the household: Mimi, bored with the polygamy and routine of marriage, wants to leave Issa. She has a lover, Abba. How will all three cope with this?

Richard Brody capsule review in The New Yorker:
From the standpoint of a romantic triangle in the Bamako beau monde, the Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé sketches a scathing portrait of a society that is rotting from the top down. The domineering, arrogant Mimi (Sokona Gakou), a well-to-do public-health bureaucrat, is having an affair with a younger man, Abba (Alou Sissoko), while married to Issa (Assane Kouyaté), a veteran filmmaker at work on a drama about an upper-class woman’s adulterous affair. As the story sprawls and lurches like a soap opera through the expansive arc of its melodramatic plot points, Cissé maintains patience, and even tenderness, for his self-deluding characters while depicting a wide array of underlying ills, including polygamous marriage, political corruption and cronyism, inflexible class hierarchies, and religious hypocrisy. The pathos of an artist too tangled in his personal agonies to look outside his gated courtyard, of a doctor who lives large without seeing a single patient, and of a politically connected playboy with an invisible source of income is heightened by Cissé’s stark visual contrast of chic white-walled villas with the roiling, unpaved roads just beyond. In Bambara.

Synopsis
In this early work, Cissé focuses on a young innocent who has left the countryside for the city and become caught in the middle of social conflict. Befriended by the manager of a textile factory, he watches as his mentor is caught between the demands of a cruel owner and the needs of the much-abused workers he oversees. Having spent years studying Marxist ideology in Moscow, Cissé was the first African director to directly confront and criticize the condition of workers in the city. Yet the social constructs and characters he develops are presented with a clarity unencumbered by the typical moralizing of socialist films.

Reviews
The film grapples with the greed and corruption of the business elite and highlights the emerging social awareness of workers and women.
A young Malian country boy works as a baara, a porter in Bamako. One day he makes friends with a young engineer, Balla Traoré, who takes him under his wing and help him out in trouble with the police and finds him a job in the factory.
Balla, who studied in Europe, tries to apply his liberal ideas in the factory. He takes on the union under the factories owner’s control, and enters into conflict with the factory management. He decries the economic exploitation in the textile factory he supervises and the corruption of his manager who will eventually have him murdered.
Baara is very much a film of its time. Its portrait of the new, Western-educated managerial class vacillating between “selling out” and adhering to their ideals; the new bourgeoisie; the 70s clothing; the new office buildings and factories built on a growing mountain of debt; the new proletarian class of factory workers; shifting domestic relations—give us a snapshot of a particular moment and social dynamic.

Overview
Finye / Le vent/ The Wind (1982) continues Cisse’s examination of internal African problems. This film examines the sources of student unrest and the relationship between postcolonial and traditional authority under a military regime. It opens with a statement about the wind awakening man’s thoughts. Batrou, the daughter of the governor, Sangare, falls in love with Bah. The students become involved with a protest against the repressive government. Batrou must confront her father, who is both a parental as well as military authority figure. Sangare faces resistance on many fronts in addition to the conflict with his daughter. His third wife confronts his abuse of authority as does Kansaye, Bah’s grandfather and traditional leader who has been overthrown by the governor. While Cisse presents these stories, he is really concerned with the larger concerns of society. This film also won the FESPACO Grand Prize in 1983.

Synopsis
A young mute woman is raped and becomes pregnant, with disastrous consequences within her family. The film also sketches the social/economic situation in urban Mali in the 1970s, particularly in relation to the treatment of women.
imdb.com

About the film
Ténin, the female protagonist of Den Muso (1975), is mute. She is raped by Sékou, her father’s former employee who resigned over pay and conditions. Cissé has said that Ténin’s muteness symbolizes the voicelesssnes of women African society and it is clear that when women in the film transgress the order of the male-dominated society in which they live, they have no right of reply. They are chastised with violent words that call into question the integrity of their bodies, and violent actions that force them to embody their transgressiveness and their subjugated position. Yet it is not just gender in Cissé’s films that causes the body to be squarely in the frame, for Sékou’s rape of Ténin can be read as the re-enactment of, and revenge form the exploitation of his own body in the factory run by Ténin’s father. It thus comments on class relations in post-Independence times…
Francophone Post-Colonial Cultures, edit. Kamal Salhi

Souleymane Cissé’s debut film contrasts urbanisation with tradition, and the conclusion is deliberately unhappy as if to express the incompatibility of the two. Den Muso is unusual for an African film in that it openly represents and discusses sexuality without passing judgment, but Cissé is careful not to lose sight of his message. Ténin is often captured in soft focus close-ups, and the silence of these sequences speaks far louder volumes than the verbose officiousness spouted by her parents. What the film lays bare more than anything else is the fact that Ténin’s inability to hear or speak is mostly extraneous, as her words would still have no power. Actress Dounamba Dany Coulibaly fulfils this challenging role with a quiet dignity, and it is almost impossible to remain unmoved by her performance in the film’s final scenes. Never dogmatic, Cissé’s film is an understated masterpiece.

… (his) early work, analytic but never schematic, realistic but full of vivid drama achieves the difficult feat of being both popular with African audiences and informative about contemporary Mali and revelatory to a wider public outside Africa…
