Synopsis:
In post-war Japan, people are working hard, but never so much more than the Yakuza. In the city of Yokosuka, Kinta and his lover Haruko brave the post-occupation period with a goal to be together… too bad her family has agreed to sell her to the highest bidding Yank in Japan.
While Kinta deals with his relationship with Haruko, his Yakuza clan is faced with a serious problem. Sakiyama, a Hawaii-born Japanese ex-naval officer, is providing the clan with the scraps they need to feed their pigs… but with strings and dollars attached. As the gang shells out more and more money, Sakiyama begins to move his alliances..and so do the members of the gang.
With the big boss in the hospital and the gang falling to pieces, only the pigs remain a constant occurrence in the life of Kinta. However, he doesn’t realize what he has until it’s too late.

The black rain in the title refers to the combination of ash, radioactive fallout, and water that fell one or two hours after the explosion. There have been other books and films about the dropping of the atomic bomb but none as unique and powerful as this one. Based on a novel by Masuji Ibuse who gathered information from interviews and the diaries of real-life bomb victims, the film depicts how an entire family is affected psychologically as well as physically by the bomb years after the original explosion. It is a horrifying vision but one that resonates with deep compassion for humanity.

Synopsis:

The film concerns Dr. Akagi, a doctor on an island in the Seto Inland Sea area during World War II. He runs into conflict with the military while trying to combat a hepatitis epidemic. Akagi earns the nickname “Dr. Liver” (カンゾー先生 Kanzō-sensei) because of his work, though the townsfolk use it as a humorous dig at his persistent diagnosis. Though the broad circumstance of Japan slowly losing the war is the setting, many of the interactions and situations tilt into humor, for instance; the very music used for the doctor running from patient to patient has an upbeat and light-hearted tone.

Donald Richie, International Herald Tribune wrote:
“Doctor Liver” is what they call Takagi sensei, a medical man in a small Inland Sea port during World War II. Convinced that liver complaints are the major cause of death he selflessly goes about his sometimes perilous research. This includes digging up the body of the local projectionist so that he can get at the diseased organ, chasing a giant whale, perhaps after the oil, and witnessing the dropping of the atom bomb, in the enveloping cloud of which he, sure enough, detects a large, malignant liver. That’s about all there is an affectionate chronicle of small-town eccentricity and lame-brained dedication. One is reminded of Akira Kurosawa’s last film, “Madadayo,” also a celebration of a headstrong sensei and one just as filled with jocular sentiment. Both look back upon a world of warm eccentricity and droll consequences. They don’t make films like this anymore.

In Malaysia, Imamura follows one false lead after another as he tries to locate unreturned Japanese who had given up the culture of their birth to integrate with Malaysian society.
