L’action se situe dans un camp de pionnier appartenant visiblement à quelque administration ou organisation de bon niveau social. L’un des éducateurs est un sculpteur fort en littérature classique, grand amateur de Lermontov. Le héros principal Mitia Lopoukhine, surnommé Lopoukh, va subir l’influence du sculpteur qui lui fait découvrir la valeur et le sens de l’art. Il devient amoureux d’une jeune fille, Droubitch, qui lit des livres en trois langues… La mise en scène de la pièce de théâtre Mascarade de Lermontov doit permettre aux adolescents de mieux comprendre sentiments, passions et valeurs morales.

Commentaire du réalisateur :
Nous voulions donner une sensation confuse de bonheur, d’harmonie, d’attente et d’éternité. Ainsi, au début, un bouquet sur une fenêtre a servi d’épigraphe. Ces sensations nous sont bien connues depuis l’enfance… Le film parle de l’éducation spirituelle et morale. Mais n’y cherchez ni complets vauriens ni modèles idéaux. Les jeunes depuis le début de leur vie accumulent connaissance du monde et expériences émotionnelles. Pendant l’adolescence se forment une structure morale et psychologique, une conscience des autres et de soi-même, de soi parmi les autres.

On pourrait mettre en épigraphe de ce film les paroles de Tolstoï : « Epoque heureuse, heureuse et révolue de l’enfance. Comment ne pas l’aimer, ne pas chérir son souvenir ?»
Sergueï Soloviev a décidé de faire un film précisément au sujet de l’enfance heureuse. C’est l’été. Une vieille propriété. Premier amour qui étonne comme un coup de soleil. Le sourire de Mona Lise sous les feux d’un projecteur. Pas trop gâché par les travaux des champs. Un spectacle d’amateurs – mise en scène de « Mascarade » de Lermontov. Ravissement et désenchantement, rencontre avec les autres et avec soi-même. Peine d’amour non partagé et tristesse de voir l’été passer.
Le contenu du film n’est pas caractérisé par des péripéties mais précisément par la réalisation du bonheur qui provient d’une multitude de riens, de mots échappés ou attendus, de la beauté de la nature, de l’appel des sentiments – voilà ce qui, ici, est important. Cette harmonie qui nous entoure, il faut la ressentir, la palper, la pénétrer pour que les humeurs passagères, les vexations, les mensonges n’engendrent pas le désespoir. A cet âge tout est si fragile.
Ce monde, Soloviev le construit selon les lois de l’art et par les moyens de l’art. Comme s’il voulait répondre à la question : pourquoi l’apport de la culture est-il si important ? Précisément, elle permet au jeune de ne pas connaître la solitude, et lui fait don de l’expérience d’autrui vécue comme la sienne propre. La culture et la nature sont les soutiens et les sauveurs de ceux qui comprennent leur sagesse et leur beauté. Transportant ses héros de la ville vers un endroit merveilleux presque isolé (tous le signes d’un camp de pionniers ont disparu), Soloviev raconte une parabole sur « l éducation spirituelle et morale » (…)
