Navy captain Avanti Planetaros is inspired by his astronomer-father to travel through outer space to reach other worlds. He becomes an aviator, and, along with the young scientist Dr. Krafft, the driving force behind the construction of a spaceship. Despite opposition from the mocking Professor Dubius, Planetaros gathers a crew of fearless men and takes off. During the long voyage, the crew becomes restless; a mutiny is narrowly avoided. Finally they reach Mars, and discover that the planet is inhabited by a people who have reached a higher stage of development, free of disease, sorrow, violence, covetousness, sexual urges, and the fear of death. Avanti falls in love with Marya, daughter of the Prince of Wisdom, the head of the Martians. Marya shares his feelings, and decides to return with him in order to bring the wisdom of the Martians to the backward Earthlings.

This lavishly produced space-travel picture is something of a milestone in the science-fiction genre. The contemporary fascination with aviation is evident: the spaceship has wings and a propeller, and the members of the crew are clad in leather aviator outfits. While the druid-like Martians may seem unintentionally comic, the film’s ideas of a utopian ideal world are quite fascinating from the viewpoint of cultural history. Ole Olsen was credited as co-author of the screenplay, and both he and the well-known writer Sophus Michaëlis hoped that the film would speak to the hearts of spectators and inspire them with “ideal sentiments”, particularly pacifism.

Pegg, Eva, Baby and Emmy — four self-supporting female office workers — share a flat and try to make their way in the rapidly modernizing but still very patriarchal Stockholm of the early 1900s.

The Norrtull Gang belongs among the most courageous and enjoyable films of the European decade. Films prior to 1923 had presented individual female characters of flesh and blood, but The Norrtull Gang established a precedent in dealing with a cast dominated by four lively women. From the opening sequence, the intertitles are unusual in reflecting a person’s thoughts and memories. The screenplay by Hjalmar Bergman transcends the familiar image of women as decorative objects. The four who make up the “gang” take city life in their stride. One loses her job after campaigning for strike action at the office. Another resigns after the boss has flirted with her once too often. The film resembles a witty book of memoirs, almost a diary. Lindberg’s direction escapes the conventions of the time so that his women still look quite modern with their non-nonsense coiffures, for example, and the minutiae of everyday life come across vividly. Seventeen years later he would again demonstrate his gift for directing actresses, in The June Night.

The titular villain is an infamous international criminal, Mrs Valentin Kempel, known as “The Predator Spider” due to her habit of ensnaring innocent victims in her web. Men are enchanted by her, and she uses this to coerce them into taking part in her criminal activities. When one of her victims takes his own life, the victim’s brother and a detective decide to put an end to the beautiful criminal’s reign of terror. But The Hunting Spider does not give in so easily – and she is not afraid to use unsporting tricks against her new opponents.

This is a fragment (about 1/3) of a feature film. It is tinted with Dutch intertitles and no score.
