The “machine that kills bad people” turns out to be Cocteau’s death camera, freeze-frame and all, to Roberto Rossellini it’s “a comedy, my friends.” The distance between neorealism and surrealism is a short one, the seaside village displays wartime scars but not before it is erected as a cutout diorama by the big hand in the sky (cf. Lubitsch’s The Doll). The wizened wanderer who’s run over on the road is later seen at the religious procession, grinning at the fireworks; the shabby photographer (Gennaro Pisano) welcomes him into his shop and is rewarded with the power to petrify anyone to death with the click of a shutter. (The first to go is the bully, buried with his arm frozen in fascist salute.) Human venality has made saints stingy with miracles, says the stranger, and yet soon there are extra fish in the ocean and millions of lire from Rome. The bishop wants the money for a new Byzantine cupola, grasping relatives circle a catatonic matriarch, Yankee tourists plan to turn cemeteries into vacation resorts, even the protesting proletariat is more interested in wolf-whistling at Miss America. “I’ll show them,” sputters the stooge wielding the “evil eye” instrument, the exasperated artist now a disgruntled executioner. A sardonic parable, a laboratory experiment unlike anything in the director’s canon, the hidden horns of a devious medium. The images that illuminate life can also snuff it out, a wry cinephile view completed a decade later with the denunciation of Illibatezza in RoGoPaG. The toy set is put away at the close, Rossellini’s advice being to “listen and laugh with an open heart.” With Giovanni Amato, Marilyn Buferd, Pietro Carloni, Joseph Falletta, William Tubbs, and Helen Tubbs. Un Pilota ritorna (1942)

A Fascist pilot, Lt. Gino Rossati (Massimo Girotti), is flying a bombing run from Italy to Greece in the early spring of 1941. He is shot down by British aircraft and becomes a prisoner of war, first of the British and later the Greeks. In one of the prison camps, he falls in love with Anna (Michela Belmonte), the teenage daughter of an Italian doctor. During a bombardment by the Italians, he is able to escape by stealing a British plane. He returns home, although wounded, and lands in time to hear the reports of Greece’s surrender.

A professional small-town photographer finds that he has the power to kill his subjects by taking their picture, turning them into statues of themselves. Rossellini left this project before it was finished, and it was edited and released a few years later without his approval–but it still comes across as a remarkably suggestive fable.

Roberto Rossellini – Socrate AKA Socrates French (1971)

A false accusation leads the philosopher Socrates to trial and condemnation in 4th century BC Athens.

It was filmed in Spain with French actors in the principal roles — including Socrates and his wife Xanthippe. These actors spoke French during the shooting and dubbed themselves afterward. It is therefore much more authentic than the Italian dubbing currently available, and reveals a far more intelligent Socrates.

For three years Rossellini and his son worked on a twelve-part series for Italian television about man’s search for food and the subsequent development of civilization.

Rossellini had lost confidence. For four years he refused to direct. He was through with art. Civilisation was collapsing from infantilism; film’s urgent task was to show the masses the map of human achievement. He marketed himself as a purveyor of educational materials. Cynics laughed as Rossellini begged funds from a steel company, Italsider, so that his son Renzo could direct the 4.5-hour The Iron Age (1964), and then convinced Jean Riboud and John de Menil to come up with $500,000 from Schlumberger, IBM, Gulf, and UpJohn so that Renzo could direct the 12-hour Italian-French-Egyptian-Roumanian Man’s Struggle for Survival celebrating the conquest of nature.

French TV came to the rescue, with a nudge from Jean Gruault: La Prise de pouvoir par Louis XIV, which was reportedly seen by 20 million French people the first week of colour broadcasting. Italy’s Christian-Democrats, not to be outdone by Guallists, replied with Acts of the Apostles. “Horizon 2000”, the new production company Riboud and de Menil had given Rossellini, was off and running.

Most of Rossellini’s movies are dedicated to history. There are 36 hours of TV dramatising the past, plus 19 features on Francesco, Garibaldi, the carbonari, Christ, and World War II. His Great Plan was to film the whole history of everything, but to have others do the directing. Fellini was immoral, he maintained, because Fellini preferred to go on making Fellini movies rather than direct one of Rossellini’s didactic subjects.
