Three youngsters lead difficult lives in a poor, rural mountain village in northern Turkey. Omer (Ozkan Ozen) hates his father, the village Imam, and imagines different ways to kill him. His friend Yakup (Ali Bey Kayali) has a secret infatuation with his teacher. Yildiz (Elit Iscan) must handle the housework handed out by her severe mother. Their tough existence is tempered by the wonder and excitement of youth, as their daily lives are divided into five sections, separated by prayer sessions.

A Run for Money concerns the quandary faced by an Istanbul clothier when he discovers half a million dollars languishing in a paper bag in the back of a cab. After a minor attempt to find its owner, Selim (Taner Birsel) absconds with the cash and hides it in his home, keeping his family in the dark about his newfound riches. As news of the missing cash spreads throughout the city, Selim becomes more and more insular, alienating those around him. When his business is robbed, he blames his assistant; as his paranoia mounts, he lavishes riches on his suspicious wife.

What’s a human anyway…
This is the question the film explores. Through the streets of Istanbul, echoing with seagull cries and boat whistles, through the people in their homes who, scream, shoulder to shoulder, back to back, lip to lip, hand in hand, fist to fist, eye to eye, cheek to cheek: Ali and his father Rasih… Neriman the tailor and her son Keten… Ipek with her baby in her belly… The doorman Riza, his wife Selvi and their son Cetin… The neighborhood butcher, Kemal… Neriman’s dog, Cakir. Ipek’s gymnast roommate Umit… Ex-boxer Aytekin and his friend Zambak…

The film begins with Ali’s accident. Ali has lost his memory. With Ali’s confusion, all the characters of the story find themselves in a state of chaos: this chaos being the chaos of daily life, of life itself. The mystery of a precious ring passing from one to another with each claiming to be the owner, the distant story of a robbery, and a mock police investigation add even more flavor to the story. But there is a parallel story within “Mommy, I’m scared”. This is the story of the human body. This story, which in real life exists in every human body regardless of revolutions, incidents, or intrigues, comes to the forefront in the film. It outshines intrigue. It shadows the eyes and ears of the human bodies observing the incidents in the film. With his or her illness, routine, posture, eating and drinking habit and body language, everyone in the film becomes a lead character in this universal theme. In this film, the language of the body speaks just as loud as the events and the characters. Bodies cracking. Breaking. Being snipped. Bleeding. Aching. Healing. Nails growing. Hair thinning. Teeth rotting. The inner organs show their bloody faces through x-rays, ultrasound screens and blood analysis reports. People cry. Yawn. Sneeze. Walk. Run. Kneel. Climb. Realizing the strange reality of living in a human body, Ali after the accident is like a newborn baby, not only trying to remember past events but also exploring his own body. In the finale of the film, the pieces of the puzzle finally fit. All the events each character goes through tie into a larger picture. Memory is restored. Ali remembers. With Ali, we also remember…

Synopsis

In the foothills of the Kurdish territories of Turkey, Jîn (Deniz Hasgüler), a young, red-scarfed rebel, slips away from her small guerrilla band to attempt a return to her family and a normal life. Hiding from both her comrades, to whom she is now a traitor, and the Turkish army, which views her as a terrorist, Jin takes refuge with the animals of the forest, who are themselves struggling under the brutality of war. In the silence, amongst the eternity of nature, Jin tends to the animals’ needs, and they, in turn, stare implacably back at her; their blank stares, understanding and accusatory all at once.

With her red head scarf, her encounters with grandmother, and her need to return to family, Jîn slips easily into the Red Riding Hood mould but this is not so much an update as it is a return to the tales rustic and very cautionary roots. Writer/director Reha Erdem has constructed a reality that nods to the past but eases back on the levels of codification that obscured the tales original purpose. Primarily, and most powerfully, Erdem reinstates men into the role of the wolf. And not just one. At every turn, Jîn is faced with a violently gropey suitor. Every (male) hand extended to her inevitably bares its claws.

Interestingly, and very satisfyingly, Erdem inverts the idea that “traditional” “family values” are a point of sanctuary. In actual fact, the further Jîn travels away from the danger of her guerrilla existence, the more peril she finds herself in. Stripped of her headscarf and arms, the young girl becomes just that: a young girl. She is suddenly easy prey for consumption, something Erdem underlines effectively when Jîn re-encounters a young shepherd, who once, petrified of her “terrorist” uniform and machine gun, supplied her with bread. Grandma, too, is not as she once was; she’s drug addled, abandoned and craving familial attention.

While this human side of Jîn is both fascinating and rewarding, it is the broader, very visual construct that is the most mesmerising. For the majority of its run time, Erdem’s film is filled with near wordless shots of the Turkish countryside, its flora and fauna. Noise, when it comes, it usually an explosion or bullet impact and the effect is destructive. The evocative juxtaposition of war and nature that carries the bulk of the film’s expansive emotional load. Under the lens of Erdem’s longtime cinematographer, Florent Herry, there is a real sense that these petty squabbles are over a land that will endure, even thrive, once the battle is won, one way or the other.

Jîn is languidly paced but well worth the time and effort. A surprising, contextualising and perspective building piece of cinema that builds to a beautiful and very chilling final image.
