Sylvia Scarlett is a 1935 romantic comedy film starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, based on The Early Life and Adventures of Sylvia Scarlett, a novel by Compton MacKenzie. Directed by George Cukor, it was notorious as one of the most famous unsuccessful movies of the 1930s. Hepburn plays the title role of Sylvia Scarlett, a female con artist masquerading as a boy to escape the police. The success of the subterfuge is in large part due to the transformation of Hepburn by RKO make-up artist Mel Berns.

This film was the first pairing of Grant and Hepburn, who later starred together in Bringing Up Baby (1938), Holiday (1938), and The Philadelphia Story (1940). Cary Grant’s performance as a dashing rogue sees him incorporate a (rather unconvincing) Cockney accent and remains widely considered the first time Grant’s famous personality began to register on film. (Grant only used the Cockney accent in a few other films, notably 1939’s Gunga Din and Clifford Odets’ None but the Lonely Heart in 1944.) Cockney was not, however, Cary Grant’s original accent. He was born and grew up in Bristol, which has a very different accent from that of London, although it was much closer to Grant’s pre-Hollywood accent than the voice he used in most films, an essentially successful product of his attempting to sound more American in order to broaden the range of roles for which he could be cast.

In the nineties the Yugoslavia Federation falls apart in bloody wars. Though undeniably an exercise in style over substance from the opening frames, Tony Scott’s languid exercise in gothic vampirism may disappoint those with little patience for arty overindulgence, though those with a taste for slow-burning decay may find The Hunger an involving study in the desperation for love and eternal youth. Vampire enthusiasts and Ann Rice followers drawn to the more romantic aspects of the mythology will likewise succumb to Catherine Deneuve’s seductive menace and David Bowie’s otherworldly charismatic performance, with Susan Sarandon offering a compelling turn as a doctor drawn in to the dark underworld while attempting to halt the vampiric Bowie’s rapidly accelerated aging process. The distinctly seductive trio certainly makes for an interesting screen presence if nothing else, and despite frequent long stretches in which little is happening in terms of action, they are consistently compelling to watch. The scenes in which Bowie withers away into old age are rendered especially chilling given not only the actor’s slowed and cautious mannerisms, but in some effectively convincing make-up by Dick Smith and co. In his feature directorial debut, Tony Scott had yet to develop a fully realized sense of storytelling, though by throwing out most preconceived notions of vampirism and focusing on the intense eroticism often merely hinted at in the majority of mainstream efforts, his inexperience actually benefits the film in terms of providing an eerily disconnected tone. Though the film does include an ample amount of bloodletting, the action here nevertheless flows like frozen molasses, a fact that may well leave many viewers with a hunger of their own.

Synopsis: A series of unrelated amorous lovers are connected by a chain of desire.

Chain of Desire is a provocative chronicle of contemporary sexual mores, featuring Linda Fiorentino, Elias Koteas, Assumpta Serna, Seymour Cassel and Malcolm McDowell among others. The film was the American entry in competition at the 1992 Montreal World Film Festival.

Chain of Desire captures New York City and modern urban America in a powerfully truthful way, years before others portrayed sex in the big apple. It is not so much about sensual desire but the hopes and dreams of each character and how only other people can help to forward these dreams. Meanwhile as characters pursue their dreams the strength of sexuality, sex, perhaps a dark desire or perhaps a gift from heaven descends on the characters caught in a more dangerous time. Today desire is considered wrong.

The film takes you through human drama with reflections of greek comedy and tragedy that touches intense feelings and untamed moments. Linda Fiorentino, now famous but then just becoming known, gives a clear performance magically transforming her character above a torch song singer.

Eyes Wide Shut was also drawn from the same European theater roots as Chain of Desire, but Temi Lopez shows us a realist possible life whereas Kubrick makes a film more unbelievable than 2001. Stylish, seductive, vibrant, provocative, intelligent describe the film.
