In the ruins of the village of Marialva, an old lady guards the entrance of what is now a cemetery, telling and retelling the history of the curse of Marialva that started a thousand years ago, when the place was a crowded village. The story starts in the day three men were sentenced to death and their wife and daughter, sentenced to be marked by fire.
