Prolific Surinamese/Dutch director of experimental films, Pim de la Parra, has crafted an improvisational satire on the process of making experimental films, and it is particularly aimed at the Dutch avant-garde. The story puts a crew of unpaid actors and actresses together while they attempt to shoot a film in very few days with practically no budget and no script. Oddly, that is exactly the situation they were actually in. While the director’s earlier uses of this formula met with some critical success, this one was received with considerably less enthusiasm.

This film is interesting in that it may be the rarest and most least well known film in the oeuvre Martin Scorsese, who co-wrote the script despite the film being a German-Dutch coproduction. In other Scorsese connections, the film features a score by Bernard Herrmann. As one might have already guessed by now, Besessen – Das Loch in der Wand AKA Bezeten – Het gat in de muur AKA Obsessions AKA Possessed is a Hitchcockian thriller that would certainly interest fans of Brian De Palma due to its more ‘exploitative’ approach to the Hitch brand of filmmaking. The film also features Dutch auteur Fons Rademakers in an acting role. Paul Verhoeven also contributed to the script, though he was not credited.

Student Nils is spying on his neighbor doing kinky stuff while his girlfriend Marina, a journalist, is looking for a missing girl. Nils is getting more and more obsessed with his peeping tom activities and slowly reveals the dark secret of his neighbor.

Paul Chevrolet is the alias of a writer of hard-boiled detective-novels, Leopold (Peter Faber), who still owes his ex-wife Willie (Jenny Arean) a great deal of money. In his latest detective-novel, gangster-boss Boy Pappa (Eddie Constantine) is introduced, who gets pursued by Leopold’s alter ego: Scotty. After writing a philosophical manuscript, ‘The Ultimate Hallucination’, Leopold gets in contact with publisher’s daughter Susanne (Liz Snoyink) who resembles his character Savannah MacKnight. Also, Boy Pappa really seems to exist. From that moment on, reality and fiction intertwine.

Synopsis:
The story of a man who goes out looking for hamburgers, while he has a beautiful steak at home. Frank and Eva can’t live together, but can’t live without each other either. He has sex with every woman he can get, while Eva wants to start a family. She, on the other hand, seeks more stability and wants to start a family. Out of frustration about his behavior, she starts an affair with their mutual friend, but whether he can give her what she wants?

Review:
This looks like an erotic movie, but while it does deal with sex and relationships, Frank & Eva is more of an offbeat comedy than anything else, which isn’t bad at all in this case. But I know some will see Sylvia Kristel on the cover and assume this is a skin flick, so I wanted to make that clear up front, though there is sex and naked flesh involved. The movie has a blend of optimism and cynicism, not the easiest narrative traits to balance, but it works well and feels natural, especially when it comes to character development. The emotional journey of Frank has real depth and isn’t rushed, so it has an organic texture and to me, that makes the story so much more effective. The humor is quirky and while Dutch culture is ingrained in that sense of humor, it isn’t lost in translation and still entertains even if you’re not familiar with a lot of that culture. The cast is quite good, with Hugo Metsers as a capable lead and Willeke Van Ammelrooy in a terrific role. Kristel has a smaller part than those two, but gets a decent amount of screen time, so fans of her unique brand of performance should be satisfied.

This one boasts a consistent stream of naked flesh, both male and female, with the three prominent performers often in a state of undress. This includes numerous topless scenes, bare asses, and full frontal nudity, so the movie is never shy about showcasing the naked bodies of the stars. So if luxurious 70s bush or dangling penises are too much for your to handle, consider yourself warned. A lot of the nudity is playful more than erotic, which makes sense given the carefree atmosphere involved, but there are sex scenes, not just naked billiards. The sex is never graphic, but it also isn’t overly tame, so there’s a balance there. No blood. No blood. The dialogue is a lot of fun, thanks to the film’s offbeat sense of humor and the spirited performances involved. The banter between Frank and his loves is well written and quite sharp, so this isn’t pure silliness, but a more measured kind of humor, driven by the characters. As for craziness, the movie’s free spirited presence and quirky sense of humor earn some points, but the movie never tumbles off the deep end.– marcfusion. com
