Director Peter Yates’ (Breaking Away, Bullitt, The Friends of Eddie Coyle) final theatrically released film re-teams with his lead from The Dresser, Albert Finney. Shane Connaughton wrote the screenplay for The Run of the Country and wrote a book about his experience on the set called A Border Diary.

“In a small village on the border of Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland, the relationship between a short tempered policeman and his rebellious son becomes even more strenuous when the young man falls for a ‘wrong’ girl.”

Johnny Ross works for Chicago mobster Peter Ross, his brother. In April 1968 Johnny Ross escapes two attempts on his life and flees to San Francisco, where he is placed in protective custody by politician Walter Chalmers, who hopes to use Ross to further his own national aspirations. To protect Ross, Chalmers asks the SFPD to assign Detective Lieutenant Frank Bullitt and his partners, Sergeants Don Delgetti and Carl Stanton, to guard him at a flophouse near an overhead freeway. It looks like a simple assignment, but at 1 AM the next day it all goes awry in a blast of a shotgun, leaving Stanton and Ross fighting for life at San Francisco General. Bullitt gets what information he can, but breathing down his neck is the angered Chalmers who vows to ruin Bullitt’s career should Ross die. Bullitt gets a break when the gunman appears at the hospital to finish off Ross, and Bullitt gets a good look at him; now Bullitt must smoke out the gunman and his backup man before Chalmers carries out his threat, leading to a high-speed pursuit, a fiery crash at a gas station, and a fingerprint check that leads to a stunning discovery about Ross, and about a couple staying at a swanky hotel in San Mateo.

Emily Crane is fired after refusing to give names to a 1951 House Un-American Activities Committee, and takes a part-time job as companion to an old lady. One day her attention is drawn to a noisy argument being conducted largely in German in a neighbouring house, the more so since one of those involved is her main senator prosecutor. Starting to look into things, she gradually enlists the help of FBI officer Cochran who was initially detailed to check her out. Just as well when things turn nasty.

Throughout Peter Yates’ masterful The Friends of Eddie Coyle, crooks, thieves and the occasional police officer use terms of complacent endearment — friend, nice guy, good man — but the words never seem to carry any meaning. All of them tend to agree that Eddie Coyle (Robert Mitchum), a career criminal at 51, is a nice guy, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t willing to put him in the dirt if it makes their lives easier. Coyle can’t really blame them for it; he knows the way of the world.

As its title points out, Friends has a very marginal interest in Eddie himself. In his first scene, Coyle goes about telling a gun dealer (Steven Keats) about how some associates of other associates slammed his fingers after a deal went sour. A low-level hood since God-knows-when, Eddie speaks about the situation congenially before telling the dealer that he needs 30 guns. Coyle has been supplying guns to a pack of bank robbers, the head of which is played by Alex Rocco. The money he’s making is to support his wife and kids before he reports for a two-year stint in a New Hampshire prison; he doesn’t feel his family should be scraping by on welfare.

Better than perhaps any movie in memory, Yates’ film depicts crime in Boston as day labor rather than some shadowy practice of seduction. Eddie has the demeanor of a plumber or a truck driver, a blue-collar man who drinks domestic and can live on a slice of pie and coffee if need be. The fact that Coyle is so effective has much to do with the fact that he is played by Mr. Mitchum. Though not as transfixing as his monstrous preacher in Night of the Hunter, Coyle easily allows for one of Mitchum’s best performances, a grounded, unsentimental study of a man as used-up and disposable as an empty can of Schlitz.

Like Jack Nicholson’s Warren Schmidt, Eddie Coyle cemented Mitchum as a hawk amongst pigeons while completely stripping him of the brazen masculinity that had made him popular. When Eddie becomes a stoolie for a suave-yet-slimy detective (the great Richard Jordan), it’s all sorrowful slow-burn rather than teary catharsis. Yates and Mitchum impress the mundane nature of Coyle’s criminal life and, in turn, connect with the cold disregard for life that these men have accepted. Watching Eddie’s bartender friend (Peter Boyle, precise and natural) make Eddie’s final arrangements brings out feelings of procedure more than mourning.

A great, unheralded craftsman, Yates was eclipsed by his star (Steve McQueen) when he directed Bullitt, only to be nominated by the Academy for his sappiest work (Breaking Away). A pre-cursor to the brooding menace of Michael Mann’s Heat, Friends supplies an example of director and lead in perfect pitch, neither artist attempting to outshine the other. Mitchum died in 1997 and it’s hard not to think of his bellowing steel baron in Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man as his final bow. Yet, watching him take in a Bruins game, drinking a few cold ones and chanting “Number Four! Bobby Orr!” before his bartender friend takes him home for the night, it’s even harder to consider The Friend of Eddie Coyle as anything less than Mitchum’s true swan song.

synopsis
Dennis Christopher stars as a recent high school graduate in Bloomington, Indiana, who is caught with his friends — Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley — coasting between high school and deciding what to do with the rest of their lives. The four friends are snobbishly looked down upon by the college students of the town as “cutters,” since they were born in Bloomington and their parents worked in the local limestone quarries that built the university. Dennis Christopher’s character Dave wants to be a champion bicycle racer and he idolizes the Italian racing team — so much so that he speaks, thinks, and acts Italian, all to his father’s (Paul Dooley) forlorn exasperation. Dave falls for a college girl (Robyn Douglass), but is ashamed to admit he is a cutter and poses as an Italian exchange student to impress her. Dave is particularly excited when his heroes — the Italian racers — come to town for a race. But they are even more snobbish than the college students and rely on dirty tricks to keep Dave from winning a race against them. After that ordeal, Dave throws away his false identity and convinces his friends to enter the university’s “Little 500” bicycle race against the college students. This light-hearted and heartwarming tale was a surprising word-of-mouth success at the box-office and won several awards, including an Academy Award for “Best Screenplay.”
