The film is set in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion in the late Qing Dynasty in China. The story, based on an unresolved crime in 1870, tells of three sworn brothers (played by Andy Lau, Jet Li and Takeshi Kaneshiro) who are forced to turn against one another due to the harsh realities of war and political intrigue.

The beginning of the flim show defeated army officer Qing Yun wandering aimlessly until he met Mi Lan who comforted him. Next scene show Wu Yang coming back from a successful loot. Wu Yang, notice the military boot Qing Yun was wearing and engaged him in a fight. Qing Yun overpowered him causing Wu Yang to admire his fighting skills and promise to introduce him to his elder brother, Er Hu who is the mastermind behind attack on soldier’s supply. After an attack on Er Hu’s village by the military, Qing Yun convinced the gang to join the army and help Qing government fight. It was during these expeditions that cause the tension to raise between the brothers as their opinion and values begin to clash. Minor plot of a love triangle between Andy Lau & Jet Li over a beautiful woman (Xu Jinglei).

The film was originally titled The Blood Brothers (simplified Chinese: 刺马; traditional Chinese: 刺馬). Director Peter Chan said it was influenced by the late Chang Cheh’s 1973 film The Blood Brothers, which is itself based on a famous high profile assassination of a local governor in 1870, but denied that it is a remake. He also decided to change the title to The Warlords in order to avoid confusion.

When asked why he chose to move away from his familiar turf of romance films, Chan said that The Warlords is actually not a martial arts film at its heart, though it contains elements of the martial arts. He added that he had made a wish to make a film depicting men’s affections after watching John Woo’s 1986 film A Better Tomorrow over twenty years ago, and has now finally gotten the chance. His goal is thus to “lead [his] audience to reclaim [the same kind of passion]” as in A Better Tomorrow, which he said is lacking in recent films.

Multi award-winning film, starring Maggie Cheung, Leon Lai and Eric Tsang. The film also features a role by renowned cinematographer Christopher Doyle (who has shot many of Wong Karwai’s films, and also shot films by Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou).

The film’s Chinese title (Tian Mi Mi) is the name of a song by Teresa Teng which plays throughout the film. It translates as “Sweet Honey”, but also implies a close loving relationship. (Leon Lai sings the title song for the ending credits.) The film shows the love that Chinese people have for the famous singer, who died the year before the film was released; the film is considered a love poem in memory of Teresa Teng.

Synopsis:
A pair of Chinese mainlanders, new to Hong Kong, find the city overwhelming. They form an uneasy friendship, and gradually fall in love. Their lives are complicated by ties to their pasts and bad decisions, and different aspirations.

Detailed plot from Wikipedia (contains spoilers):
The film, spanning years, centres on two Chinese mainlanders who migrate to Hong Kong to make a living, but end up falling in love. Leon Lai plays naive Mandarin-speaking northerner Li Xiao-jun, and Maggie Cheung plays Li Qiao, an opportunist Cantonese-speaking entrepreneur from the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou. She takes advantage of other mainlanders because she is at least able to speak Cantonese (the dialect of Hong Kong), whereas most mainlanders speak only Mandarin. The loneliness of living in the big city brings the two into a passionate love affair. But their different ambitions mean that they are unable to be together. Li Xiao-jun wants to bring his fiancée to Hong Kong; Li Qiao just wants to get rich. Eventually, Li Xiao-jun marries his fiancée in Hong Kong, and Li Qiao winds up in a relationship with a mob boss named Pao (played by Eric Tsang). Li Qiao becomes a successful entrepreneur, achieving her Hong Kong dream. In spite of their seemingly separate lives they are still in love, and they have one final tryst in the room they used to share before they are separated again. Burdened by guilt and his love for Li Qiao, Xiao-jun confesses to his wife that he has not been faithful. He leaves Hong Kong, and becomes a cook in the United States. Pao, chased by the Hong Kong police, escapes with Li Qiao to the U.S. as illegal immigrants, but Pao is killed in a mugging shortly after arriving. The film ends with lonely immigrants Xiao-jun and Li Qiao (who has now got her Green Card) fatefully meeting by chance in front of an electronics shop that has a display TV playing a Teresa Teng video, following the news of the singer’s death.
