Two women from very different worlds bond over an unlikely connection — both of them have a husband serving time in the same prison — in Visiting Hours, a study of class and economic disparity that avoids certain narrative familiarities while succumbing to others. Veteran French director Patricia Mazuy reunites with her The Kings Daughters (2000) star Isabelle Huppert, who plays a bourgeois wife who takes an interest in Hafsia Herzi’s working-class dry-cleaner, although the reason for her fascination is, intriguingly, never explicitly laid out. The two characters become friends, although both women’s ulterior motives give this uneven but compelling film its tense energy.

Plot: This brooding, enigmatic story won the 1989 Prix George Sadoul at the Cannes Film Festival, in the category “Un Certain Regard,” which focuses on “smaller” films. In the story, Gerard (Jacques Spiesser) and his wife Annie (Sandrine Bonnaire) have made a nice life for themselves on their farm. That life is disturbed by the arrival of Gerard’s older brother Roland (Jean-François Stévenin) – a brother Annie never knew existed. It gradually becomes clear that both brothers had once negligently set fire to a barn while drunk, inadvertently causing the death of a sleeping wanderer. Roland took all the blame for causing the death, and spent ten years in prison for it. Now he wants Gerard to make those years up to him. Gerard, who up until then had succeeded in putting the incident out of his mind, is now consumed by guilt, and, since he loves both his brother and his wife, doesn’t know what to do about those demands. With only four feature films to her name over the past 30 years and a propensity to always go where you don’t expect, from the rural drama of Peaux de vaches (discovered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 1989) to high-level horse riding in Of Women and Horses [+] (screened on the Piazza Grande at Locarno in 2011) and Mme de Maintenon’s ruthless gynaecium at the end of the seventeenth century in The King’s Daughters (also screened in the Un Certain Regard section in 2000 and nominated for a César Award for Best Film). Having released just a handful of films, Patricia Mazuy has yet again established herself as an audacious, original, skilled and incisive filmmaker. Her new opus, Paul Sanchez Is Back! is no exception, plunging into a strange contemporary world, a sort of bottom-level look at a wild France, where depressing peri-urban artisanal areas and signs of social misery rub shoulders with the majestic sun-soaked countryside, where crime news feeds the imagination of the local population, and where an explosion rumbles like a pressure cooker, seeking a way to escape the gravity of everyday life… The rumour that a murderer on the run has been sighted is the spark that will ignite the passion and irrational life of young Constable Marion (rising star Zita Hanrot).

By contrasting different worlds, Patricia Mazuy spins a spiral in which discomfort and ennui get out of control at high speed before descending into the irrational. A portrait whose police comedy and burlesque tones create a feeling of dissonance with its sharp social realism, symbolic episodes, and western style – an overlap that is only enhanced by the strangeness of John Cale’s music. Some very strong contrasts and an ending that may be disconcerting to viewers who are more accustomed to a homogenous style, but that give flesh and blood to this smart, entertaining and quirky film, which has a lot to say under via a mixture of multiple genres brought to the big screen with crystal clear efficiency.

ALL THE BOYS AND GIRLS IN THEIR TIME is a series of films
commissioned by the French-German TV station Arte. Ten directors were
asked to participate by making a movie about their teenage years. Each
film had to include at least one party scene which highlighted the music
of the time. TRAVOLTA AND ME, Patricia Mazuy’s entry, transpires in
1978 and (not surprisingly, given the title) takes its inspiration from
U.S. disco and SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER.

For those of my generation, TRAVOLTA AND ME holds a strong
nostalgic component. Beyond that, this is a nice period piece that has
limited success muddling its way through the teenage angst engendered by
a first love. The main character, Christine, is wildly infatuated with
American actor John Travolta until she meets real life heartthrob
Nicolas. While the boy sees Christine as just another potential
conquest (and an opportunity to win a bet with his friends), she falls
head-over-heels for him. What follows starts out as a pleasant
examination of coping with youthful passion and the pressure to have
sex, but ends in a wildly over-the-top look at what many teenagers wish
they could do.

In its restrained moments, TRAVOLTA AND ME is an effective, often-
moving look at one girl’s struggles with the conflicting desires created
by the approach of adulthood. When the story is focused, it works.
However, things become unbalanced near the end as Mazuy permits all
sorts of strange and unbelievable events to take place. These lend an
unreal aura to the final twenty minutes that distances us from
characters we’re still getting to know, dulling the impact of the
concluding sequence and dampening an otherwise fine character study.
