Two curious extraterrestrials land with their dustbin at a panel-house estate one day. Their task is to study the human race by studying Dr. Jánský, an average worker of the Institute for Relations with the Extraterrestrial Civilizations, whom their presence drives mad. Who would like to be selected as a perfect sample of mediocrity and insignificance that, moreover, cannot lie? The playful comedy by Oldřich Lipský is entirely based on the central couple, Mr. A and Mr. B, performed by the comedian duo Lasica – Satinský, topped up by the drawings by Vladimír Jiránek.

Storyline
This futuristic science fiction comedy features an atomic bomb blast that causes women to grow beards and lose the ability to have children. A summit meeting is held at the United Nations, with the proposed solution of building a time machine. The decision is made to travel back in time and murder Einstein, with the hopeful result being that without the noted mathematician’s research there will be no atomic bombs.

summary
Novelist Josef Nesvadba made his mark in Czech film history as the author of terrific source material and as a screenwriter. With the exception of Tajemství zlatého Buddhy (The Secret of the Gold Buddha, 1973), Nesvadba attended to sci-fi themes. He would write screenplays based on his own literary output, and this is what he did for the 1969 sci-fi comedy Zabil jsem Einsteina, pánové…, directed by the experienced Oldřích Lipský. On this occasion, however, the subject matter better suited co-screenwriter Miloš Macourek, who took part in the shooting of several stories based on mind-spinning turns of events with Václav Vorlíček (“Pane, vy jste vdova!” [You Are a Widow, Sir, 1970], Což takhle dát si špenát [How About a Plate of Spinach?, 1977]) and Jindřich Polák (Zítra vstanu a opařím se čajem [I’ll Get Up and Scald Myself with Tea Tomorrow, 1977]). When it comes to Lipský’s involvement in directing Zabil jsem Einsteina, pánové… it’s clear that sci-fi was not his usual ground as he was essentially a writer-director who dramatised comic material (Muž z prvního století [The Man from the First Century, 1961], Srdečný pozdrav ze zeměkoule [Cordially from Earth, 1982]). This plot of this film, which cinema audiences got to see at the start of the 1970s, turns on a well-known hypothesis concerning time travel. If somebody could go back in time and assassinate Albert Einstein, they would prevent the application of outcomes of the theoretical physicist’s work – outcomes which, the film story relates, were essential in the construction of the destructive “G-bomb” at the dawn of the third millennium. One effect of a G-bomb detonation that has taken place is that women have lost the capability to reproduce and have started to grow beards. A scientific expedition from the future, led by Professor Moore (Jiří Sovák), travels to the year 1911. But expedition members Gwen Williams (Jana Brejchová), a historian, and Frank Pech, a mathematician, do not want to kill: they only want to help facilitate a fatal accident. According to attested historical documents on which the mission is based, Einstein (Petr Čepek) almost died in the house of the banker Wertheim when a heavy chandelier plunged from the ceiling. If they could just move him to the right spot, then it would be mission accomplished. But the thoroughly planned mission fails – and a second expedition causes scientific consequences that end up leaving Moore as the only “real man” on Earth… For Lipský, this motion picture followed his experimental Happy End (1967). It is a crazy, over-complicated comedy, but, in the end, it is saved by a great cast. As an aside, it is noteworthy that the extinction of mankind was connected to secret US arms industry activities.

In the near future in Czechoslovakia (the movie was made in 1961, after all), a space flight is in the final stages of preparation. As the astronauts are being interviewed, Joseph the upholsterer (Milos Kopecký) is gluing the last bits of padding in place. Joseph is lazy and incompetent, and always complaining — the classic goof-off who tries to shift blame to anywhere but him. While his supervisor berates him for being behind schedule via the communicator screen in the ship, Joseph manages to kick the takeoff switch and the rocket takes off into space with him as the only passenger.

Next we see Joseph (with a full beard now, apparently to demonstrate that much time has passed) returning home in the ship with an alien companion from the “Blue Star” named Adam (Vít Olmer). The viewer never sees Adam’s home world, but we learn that he has accompanied Joseph home to learn more about the “pattern” of humans. Adam looks exactly like a human except for a slightly larger, hairless cranium. His clothes are very “futuristic”, even more so than those the humans are wearing when they reach Earth. After landing, Adam uses a small handheld device of his to become invisible, the better to observe the humans.

Joseph discovers to his surprise that 500 years have passed. During an interview with the local government administrators and scientists, Joseph is amused then he administrator asks him, “When did socialism come to Luxembourg?”, and he responds, “Socialism? Radio Luxembourg? Oh boy!” In turn, they laugh at him when he asks “Is this the East… or the West?”, with the obvious implication that the East prevailed over the years and everything is now a happy worker’s Socialist paradise: “He IS from the First Century.” Everyone he sees is happy and content, with modern conveniences everywhere and no apparent conflicts anywhere. War appears to be a thing of the past.

Joseph is given a guide (Josef Hlinomaz), a new apartment and access to a machine that can deliver anything a person wants to select from a catalog. Confronted with the ability to fulfill his every desire, he goes wild with gluttony and begins tearing pages from the catalog and feeding them into the machine. Dozens of boxes of “stuff” appear — including a giraffe, which seems to be the ultimate symbol of consumption for its own sake. This begins to make the locals wonder if there’s not something wrong with “The Man from The First Century”, and they decide he’s been infected with “greedyitis”.

Ultimately Joseph is called upon to explain himself, and is interviewed by people from around the world via television. Joseph’s self-importance and lack of knowing anything important, even about his own time, disgusts the assembled viewers, and they begin to drop out of the meeting. Desperate for attention, Joseph claims to have discovered a new fuel source he “invented” on the Blue Star (which is actually Adam’s people’s technology), which brings renewed interest in him. Of course, he knows nothing about the subject, and convinces Adam to help him as part of his continued study of humans. Adam agrees, but his studies are beginning to show that Joseph is quite different from the other humans on Earth, and he begins to distrust Joseph.

Much of the movie is Joseph making a complete buffoon of himself everywhere he goes — a museum, a bar, etc. He can’t fit in because everyone else is happy and content with their lives (one character says he enjoys cutting up onions because it’s his only chance for a good cry), while Joseph is still his old incompetent, greedy and blame-shifting self.

A love interest is introduced by the characters Peter (Radovan Lukavský) and Eve (Anita Kajlichova), young scientists who are obviously in love and want to marry, but Peter is depressed because he doesn’t have a dowry (?), and can’t make the offer. The fuel formula figures prominently in this subplot, and in the denouement is presented by Adam to Peter and Eve as a gift, “Because you’re in love.”

Ultimately, Joseph’s increasing inability to fit in begins to disgust his hosts and they begin to reject him, and in a fit of near-madness Joseph tells them about Adam and claims that he is studying Earth in order to attack it with advanced weapons. Joseph is finally sent off to the “sanitarium” to have his greedyitis cured, and while there sees via the video screen when Adam greets the others and declares his peaceful intentions: “Why would thinking beings want to make war with one another?”

Realizing he’s ruined, Joseph sneaks out of the hospital and makes his way back to the rocketship, where he takes off, intending to go back to the Blue Star. Adam is watching with the others on the video screen, and alters the rocket’s course to send him back to where he came. The final shot is the administrator breaking the Fourth Wall and speaking directly to us: “Look out, people. He’s coming back to YOU.”

Quote:
Lemonade Joe also known as Lemonade Joe or the Horse Opera is a film directed by Oldrich Lipský, based on a series of short stories by Czech writer/animator Jirí Brdecka. It was the Czechoslovak entry to the 1964 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

Probably the most well known of the spoofs on Western culture and cinema (which included science fiction, comic strips, and spy movies) to come out of the Czech New Wave—and in my opinion the most effective—Lemonade Joe is a hilarious musical parody of the Wild West inspired by B grade silent era westerns and infused with that wonderful Czech sense of satirical comedy that holds universal appeal.

Stetson City, Arizona is where this tale takes place. A typical dusty western town where the premiere establishment is the Trigger Whisky Saloon. With its swinging mid-height doors, out of tune piano, dancing girls, and where the whiskey flows all night. The story details the black-and-white, good-and-evil rivalry between the mean proprietor of the Trigger Whisky, Doug Badman (Rudolf Deyl) and the heroic gunslinger Lemonade Joe (Karel Fiala).

A legendary figure who rides into town all dressed in white, just in time to rescue young Winifred Goodman (the lovely Olga Schoberová) from the base intentions of Badman and his sadistic brother Hogo Fogo (Milos Kopecký); and to use his impeccable marksmanship skills, which he attributes to his favorite brand of lemonade (in an obvious reference to Coca-Cola), to convince the local residents to switch to drinking that instead of whiskey.

The plot may sound childish and pedestrian, but the execution is full of visually inventive techniques and clever genre tributes. Writer Jirí Brdecka’s roots were in animation and some of his ideas are used to great effect in the film. The opening scene inside the saloon shows a very cartoon like all-out bar brawl, expertly choreographed and fluidly edited with stop start motions.

There are other various little touches as well, like cigar smoke rings used to pass secret messages, and a marvelous gunfight sequence with freeze frames and graphic lines representing bullet paths. In addition to the slapstick comedy, there are a number of musical scenes performed by each of the main characters that are quite fascinating including the title song which seems to be a nonsensical combination of English and Spanish words.

The film is shot in black-and-white and uses a predominately ‘lemonade’ yellow filter that on occasion switches to red, blue, or green depending on the mood of the scene. There are also some very interesting closeup shots that are strikingly similar to those that Sergio Leone made famous. Hard to say whether or not it was a conscious attempt at parody or merely coincidence (Leone’s first spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars was filmed the very same year), but still something to take note of.

At times the endless silly jokes and routines start to feel repetitive, but on the whole Lemonade Joe is still a fantastically entertaining take on the American West, a unique and enjoyable film full of playful moments, sharp wit, and that amazing and surreal Czech sense of humor.
— Bonjour Tristesse
