A magical fairy tale based on the Ossetian national epos that tells us about the rivalry of strength and art, ancient evil and kind magic, pride and anxious love. Two suitors vie for the hand of the king’s daughter: a famous warrior and a simple shepherd.

The only animated feature made by Mikhail Tumelya, and quite an ambitious work. Animated mostly with stop motion puppets, with some scenes using cel, painted and powder animation. I think this movie is exceptionally well-structured and it’s one of my favourite Russian animated features. Despite the rather bland short live-action intro at the beginning. It also has interesting characters – even the “villains” are often shown to have redeeming features. It is told from the perspective of an old-school Indo-European culture, and assumes social mores that to modern sensibilities seem really alien. It won a number of local and international festival awards at the time, but never really got a proper release.
