Synopsis:
John Steinbeck introduces five of O. Henry’s most popular short stores in this anthology film. In “The Cop and the Anthem” a homeless alcoholic is increasingly frustrated in numerous attempts to get arrested and jailed for 90 days in a warm cell rather than face the rigors of a New York winter. In “The Clarion Call” a NYPD detective has a crisis of conscience when he is torn between his duty to arrest a childhood friend for a murder only he knows he committed and the debt of honor he still owes to him. In “The Last Leaf” a naive young girl is stricken with pneumonia after being seduced and jilted by venal actor. When she loses her will to live, her devoted sister and an eccentric Greenwich Village artist try to help her to survive. In “The Ransom of Red Chief” two bumbling con men kidnap the son of a rural sheriff for ransom but find they’ve taken on more than they can handle. Finally, in “The Gift of the Magi” an impoverished but devoted young couple struggle to pay for Christmas gifts worthy of their mutual love.

Synopsis:
The final film of stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is an elegy for the death of the Old West from writer Arthur Miller and director John Huston. Gable stars as Gay Langland, an aging hand traveling the byways and working at rodeos with his two comrades, Guido (Eli Wallach) and young Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift). The three men come up with a plan to corral some misfit mustangs and sell them for dog food, but Gay’s new girlfriend Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), a high-minded ex-stripper who has just divorced her husband Ray (Kevin McCarthy) in Reno, is appalled by the plan. Although both Guido and Perce are also in love with Roslyn, she stands by Gay, sure that in the end he will do the right thing, even as he and his pals begin their planned roundup.

Synopsis:
When cowboy Beau and his friend Virgil take the bus from Montana to Phoenix, Arizona, to participate in the rodeo, Beau is also hoping to find his “angel”. There, virginal Beau falls in love with cafe singer “hillbilly” Chérie performing “That Old Black Magic” and plans to take her back to Montana. The next day, he intends to marry her after the rodeo, but she escapes. She wants to go Hollywood, where she hopes to be discovered. But Beau tracks her down, and forces her on the bus back to Montana. On the way, they stop at Grace’s Diner. The road ahead is blocked by snow, and by now all have learned that Beau is kidnapping and bullying the girl. The men subdue Beau until he promises to leave Chérie alone. Later, the road is cleared, and contrite Beau, after getting beaten in a scuffle with the bus driver the previous night, apologizes for his rude behavior and is ready to depart without her. Chérie forgives him, and discovering his nicer side, decides on her own to go with him.
