Maria Margarethe Harder, who wrote under the pseudonym of Kate Kestien, was born in 1898 in a village in Schleswig-Holstein. […] arder’s political engagement culminated in 1929, when she moved to Berlin and became the managing director of the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) in- house film production company, which produced and distributed party-sponsored films. During this time she also wrote articles for the popular women’s magazine Frauenwelt (Women’s world), a weekly publication for proletarian women sponsored by the SPD. Furthermore, Harder published film reviews in Social-Democratic papers, and directed two of the SPD’s own productions, the documentary Der Weg einer Proletarierin (A proletarian’s way, 1929) and the film Lohnbuchhalter Kremke (Payroll clerk Kremke, 1930), both centering on the exploitation of workers (Tramitz 1991, 311). Contemporary reviewers such as Siegfried Kracauer praised her work as a filmmaker, particularly for her realistic depictions of class differences and social injustices (Böhme 1981, 184-185).
