Synopsis:
First-time feature filmmaker Salif Traore follows in the footsteps of master filmmaker Ousmane Sembene with this drama that follows a ‘bastard’ who returns to his rural Mali village after being cast out many years back. Zanga (Fili Traoré) was born out of wedlock, making him a figure of scorn to the locals. Many years after being unceremoniously ejected from the village, Zanga returns wearing the
façade of a successful engineer determined to usher his village into the modern era – much to the consternation of the superstitious villagers who previously shunned him. When a young villager drowns in a nearby river, the locals draw the conclusion that river goddess Faro is enraged by Zanga’s return. But Zanga isn’t about to be run off before he finds out the identity of his biological father and helps improve the lives of the local villagers. Meanwhile, as the tide of anger grows, the local chief makes the call for a sacrifice.

This film, directed by Malian director Cheick Oumar Sissoku confronts the patriarchal traditions of Mali, including the controversial issue of female circumcision. A recent widow, Nanyuma feels liberated from the cruel treatment of her late husband but is ordered by the village chief to marry her husband’s equally oafish brother. She leaves the village and hides with her niece Fili but is eventually forced to return. Although her resistance to her culture’s rigid traditions stirs her people to a higher level of awareness of freedom and social independence, Nanyuma realizes that her only chance at claiming her own freedom will be by leaving her community. The film’s satiric approach is modeled after a theatrical tradition native to Mali.

In the harsh landscape of the Malian desert, Zamiatou fights to keep her two sons and daughter on the right path while dealing with a disabled husband who is mentally and physically scarred by his years as a political prisoner. Rejecting the idea of prostituting her daughter to French settlers for money, Zamiatou turns to a former lover, who lends her a donkey. With the animal in tow, she braves the desert alone to find a way to support her loved ones.

Mother of the Dunes uses the slow rhythms of African cinema to underline the single-minded courage of its heroine, a mother of three. Detail by detail, this finely lensed first feature by Mali helmer Abdoulaye Ascofare salutes the triumph of human ingenuity over terrible odds. Its lingering tempo is not for everyone, but fans of African films will find much to admire in this effort.
Ascofare, who also wrote the story, manages to blend the timeless quality of life in the desert (camel caravans, blue-robed nomads, stone cutters) with some very acrimonious comments about government corruption, skillfully woven into the story.
Lensing in the Sahel desert in Mali and Morocco, cinematographer Yorgos Arvanitis turns the immense oceans of sand, where strange rock formations rise up as in Monument Valley, into a legendary landscape. Setting becomes a stark landscape of the soul that reflects Zamiatou’s indomitable willpower and clear thinking.
Also making an important artistic contribution is the musical score of Harouna Barry and Ibrahim Dicko. When Zamiatou’s gray-haired ex returns the symbol of their love, a broken violin, Zamiatou plays it as she rides through the desert, and later dreams of it playing the tune magically by itself. Dreams and memories add depth to the main character, though the lioness’ share of credit goes to thesp Ousmane, who brings great naturalness and power to the role.

From the standpoint of a romantic triangle in the Bamako beau monde, the Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé sketches a scathing portrait of a society that is rotting from the top down. The domineering, arrogant Mimi (Sokona Gakou), a well-to-do public-health bureaucrat, is having an affair with a younger man, Abba (Alou Sissoko), while married to Issa (Assane Kouyaté), a veteran filmmaker at work on a drama about an upper-class woman’s adulterous affair. As the story sprawls and lurches like a soap opera through the expansive arc of its melodramatic plot points, Cissé maintains patience, and even tenderness, for his self-deluding characters while depicting a wide array of underlying ills, including polygamous marriage, political corruption and cronyism, inflexible class hierarchies, and religious hypocrisy. The pathos of an artist too tangled in his personal agonies to look outside his gated courtyard, of a doctor who lives large without seeing a single patient, and of a politically connected playboy with an invisible source of income is heightened by Cissé’s stark visual contrast of chic white-walled villas with the roiling, unpaved roads just beyond.
