In The Trilogy, three different but parallel stories unfold revealing the lives of a husband and wife, a policeman and his drug-addicted wife, and a prison escapee and his friends. The characters wander in and out of three films where we see them switch from leading men and women to supporting actors. The three films, all of different genres (the first is a thriller, the second a comedy and the third a melodrama), provide the same action from different angles and perspectives. Each film can be appreciated on its own, but together they form a cohesive whole allowing the viewer to gain a deeper understanding of the characters. Although it is reminiscent of Kurosawa’s Rashomon and Balzac’s novels, Lucas Belvaux’s project is unprecedented.

Part.3 For years, Pascal, a cop, has been secretly using his connections to find morphine for his drug-addicted wife Agnès. His actions catch up with him as he is blackmailed by his sources: he won’t get any more drugs until he delivers Bruno, an escaped convict. Pascal faces a moral dilemma and is unable to provide morphine to Agnès. Agnès’ friend Cécile asks him to investigate her husband Alain. As Pascal focuses his attention on Bruno, Cécile, and Alain, Agnès goes out to find drugs and stumbles on Bruno who helps her.

Part.2 Alain has just learned that he has to have routine surgery. A hypochondriac, he is convinced that he will die, and in order not to alarm his wife Cécile he tells her a series of lies. Cécile is still madly in love with her husband, and puzzled by his behavior, she hires Pascal, a detective married to her friend Agnès, to track Alain. Alain’s lies about his operation and Cécile’s secret investigation lead to mounting misunderstandings between them and to Alain’s belief that all his friends and family are set against him.

Part.1 In this noir-thriller, Bruno, an extreme-left revolutionary, has escaped from prison and contacts his former accomplice Jeanne, now a teacher and a mother, in order to restart his political activities. However, the police are on his tracks and for Pascal, the capture of Bruno would help him regain his credibility. While on the hunt for Bruno, Pascal also has to care for his drug-addicted wife Agnès. In her search for drugs, Agnès stumbles on Bruno. He trades her drugs for a hide-out in a mountain chalet owned by Agnès’ friend Cécile.

A brutal murder in Le Havre: 38 people must have noticed, but say they heard or saw nothing. A claustrophobic, moving, beautifully shot film with a strong cast including Yvan Attal, Sophie Quinton and Nicole Garcia. A clear picture of what fear and shame do to people.

Outside an apartment complex in the French port city of Le Havre, a female student is gruesomely murdered in the middle of the night. The complex’s 38 inhabitants say they heard or saw nothing. Until one of them, the introverted pilot Pierre (Yvan Attal), decides to break the silence. He admits to the police that he was awakened by a desperate, primeval cry. A cry that cannot have escaped his neighbours’ attention.

But why did they, just like Pierre, not come to the victim’s aid? Why do they collectively deny having witnessed the murder? Due to cowardice, shame or fear? These questions haunt the traumatised Pierre, and director Belvaux (The Trilogy) states them openly. His book adaptation (the opening film at IFFR 2012) is an unbiased investigation. Why do people tend to want to hush up certain events? 38 Witnesses is a thorough, psychological study and a claustrophobic murder mystery in one. The understated cinematography and subdued soundtrack subtly increase the tension.
