Quote:
For a small film, Suddenly has a lot of baggage. Even after many years, it remains tainted by its eerie foreshadowing of President Kennedy’s assassination nine years following the film’s release—an association made all the more sinister by the oft-repeated (and now disputed) assertion that Lee Harvey Oswald watched the film shortly before the President was gunned down in Dallas. Then there’s the claim that star Frank Sinatra ordered the film withdrawn from circulation after Kennedy was killed, an order Sinatra had no power to give, although he did protest when a TV station aired the film shortly after the 35th President’s death. In the Nineties, the film was the victim of a botched colorization effort that turned Sinatra into Old Brown Eyes, and the failure to renew the film’s copyright caused it to become available through multiple public domain distributors in inferior versions that were painful to watch.

Sinatra could never have predicted the film’s twisted path when he surprised everyone by choosing an obscure independent production as the follow-up to his Oscar-winning role in Columbia’s big budget From Here to Eternity. But Sinatra had something to prove. After years of playing song-and-dance men, he had been handed an Oscar for a dramatic role, but he still wasn’t taken seriously as an actor. Too many people thought he’d simply played himself as Private Maggio in Eternity. Sinatra wanted something so clearly different that there would be no question he was creating a character. John Baron, the former military man planning to assassinate the President of the United States (and mighty pleased about it), was about as far from Private Maggio as any role could be.

Suddenly was shot on a no-frills budget over four weeks in a small town outside of Los Angeles. The screenplay was the work of Richard Sale, a screenwriter and occasional director, and also a prolific writer of popular fiction, who understood the art of drawing characters in a few bold strokes. The director, Lewis Allen, had already begun the transition to TV, where his efficient craftsmanship would keep him working for the next twenty years on classic shows like Perry Mason, The Detectives and Bonanza. The result was a spare, tightly wound thriller that would have simply been a small town film noir classic, if it hadn’t experienced the good (or possibly bad) fortune of being freighted by history with cultural resonance far beyond anything its creators ever imagined.

Ladd is as hardboiled as ever in this minor film noir classic. He is a tough reporter in Chicago (though he is never shown working at a typewriter) who first appears at a run-down south side rooming house, attempting to talk a runaway girl into returning home. In the next room he finds the emaciated but beautiful body of a girl who has died of tuberculosis (Reed). Before the police arrive Ladd pockets her address book and then systematically begins to look up the various venal people in her life who tell her story in flashbacks. There is Kroeger, a vicious gangster; Muir, a nervous banker; Freeman, an invalid writer; Lees, an addled boxer; Havoc, a call girl; Hervey, a gangster’s moll; and, in a startling performance, Strudwick, as a melancholy mobster. Each tells a tale about Reed as Ladd reconstructs her life, encountering several murders and blackmail victims along the way, finally shooting it out with culprit Kroeger, killing him and being wounded himself. Ladd is so enraptured with the dead girl (not unlike Dana Andrews in LAURA) that he leaves his hospital bed to attend her funeral, where he burns her address book to protect her memory, a gallant beau geste. Seeing this, Kennedy, portraying the dead girl’s brother, tells Ladd that he knew her best of all. Based on a roughhouse 1933 novel, it’s a sad, sometimes morose film, but it’s told with great pace and power, most of it steel gray, full of soot and grime and struggle, like Chicago itself, where the exterior shots were done. Ladd is superb as the callous reporter with a soft heart for Reed’s memory. (This was Ladd and Reed’s second film together after BEYOND GLORY, although they do not appear in any scene as a twosome.) CHICAGO DEADLINE is typical of the hard-hitting, well-made crime films that were hallmarks of the late 1940s, and Ladd is the epitome of the shadowy hero, the man from the other side of the tracks who didn’t give a damn … except that he did. (Remade as “Fame Is the Name of the Game” for TV.)

Berkeley Art Museum – Pacific Film Archive writes:
Ray Milland is both repellent and compelling in this Victorian thriller, directed with bleak panache by Lewis Allen (The Uninvited). Milland plays a charming thief, forger, and all-around blackguard who spots a prime mark in Ann Todd, a missionary’s widow and proprietor of a boarding house where Milland takes up residence. Under the influence of Milland’s advances, the straitlaced Todd abandons her inhibitions, eventually becoming complicit in larceny and blackmail—but her seducer will learn that a woman’s passion, once unleashed, can be difficult for even the most calculating con artist to control. A carefully drawn backdrop of British respectability heightens the drama of Todd’s decline: as so many English mysteries have proven, crime can be all the more thrilling when draped in crinoline.

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson

If the Perfect Marriage in this romantic comedy were truly perfect, there wouldn’t be any story, would there? Outwardly an ideal couple, Maggie and Dale Williams (Loretta Young, David Niven) have grown tired of one another after 10 years. Petty squabbles lead to major battles, exacerbated by the well-meaning interference of friends and relatives. Caught in the middle is Maggie and Dale’s daughter Cookie (Nona Griffith), who loves both parents equally and doesn’t want to choose between them-which may very well happen if things get any worse. Leonard Spigelgass’ screenplay, based on a play by Samson Raphaelson, is a lot closer to real life than most films of the period. Funny though the disagreements between the Williamses may be, there is an underlying pain and harshness to their bickering, which even the reasonably happy ending cannot altogether dissipate.
