The Russian Descendant of the Snow Leopard is based on a famous Kirghizian folktale. Apparently the Kirghizian folks had plenty of time to tell this story: to print a full synopsis would result in a novelette. Essentially, the story involves a proud group of highland hunters called the Snow Leopards, who in order to survive a brutal winter must request help from the Lowland people. The price for this assistance is the hand of the Snow Leopard’s daughter, who is promised in marriage to a wealthy Lowland trader. During the Springtime wedding celebration, the trader becomes fascinated by a stranger who wins all the athletic contests. This “male” contestant turns out to be a woman, who has arrived to seek freedom for her imprisoned husband. The subsequent romance between the trader and the beautiful stranger results in disaster and bloodshed for both the Snow Leopards and the Lowlanders. Originally titled Potomok Belongo Barssa Descendent of the Snow Leopard won a Silver Bear award for director Tolomus Okeyev at the Berlin Film Festival.

Synopsis:

Chimp has more than his share of problems: his pretty and capricious girlfriend causes him nothing but heartache, his father is a self-loathing chronic alcoholic, and his long-suffering mother has had enough. She leaves, taking Chimp’s kid sister with her.

Melodrama with fairytale elements about an urban beauty in Kyrgyzia who is kidnapped during a visit to the countryside and then has to marry a shepherd according to local tradition.

For decades it was common in Kyrgyzstan for single women to be kidnapped so they could become brides for local bachelors, and a couple discovers this still takes place in this comedy-drama. Asema (Asem Toktobekova) was born and raised in the big city, so she experiences a bit of culture shock when her fiancée Murat (Siezdbek Iskenaliev) takes her to the small village in the country where he was born to meet his parents. Asema learns that folks still kidnap would-be brides when she hears about a plot to abduct neighborhood bookworm Anara (Zarema Asanalieva) and wed her to Sagyn (Tynchtyk Abylkasymov), who raises sheep and never talks. Outraged, Asema tries to stop the kidnapping, but while she’s busy with that Murat succumbs to the allure of his former girlfriend Burma (Elnura Osmonalieva), and some locals decide that Asema might make some lonely guy a fine mate.
