The magical fairy tale of Krabat is the story of a boy on the threshold of adulthood facing dark forces which fascinate him until he realizes they can destroy him. The Krabat fable dates back to the end of the 17th century from Silesian Upper Lausitz. Inspired by the book by Otfried Preussler, master filmmaker Karel Zeman managed convert this story into a movie in his own inimitable way. This fairy tale deals with forces of the heart that control our emotions and behavior, and can’t be changed. They can be a source of hatred and love, anger, envy and joy. In this eternal battle, only a strong will and a faith in love can lead to liberation from the snares of evil.

Synopsis:
The Thirty Years’ War is seen from the point of view in this satirical slapstick comedy that combines engravings, old cartoons, montages, special effects, and film. The positions of both sides of the religious war are fair game for biting satirical jabs. Petr (Kostka) plays a peasant who is pressed to join one side before being captured by the enemy and mistaken for a Duke. Matej (Miloslav Holub) can change sides quickly with his reversible cloak. Lenka (Emilia Vasaryova) disguises herself as a jester to avoid the conflict and gives her comments about the pompous futility on both sides of the conflict.

The Fairy Tale of Honzik and Marenka employs an ingenious animation technique using cut-out figures that is typical of the creative genius of Karel Zeman, the writer and director of this 66-minute film. The sophistication of the technique, and a sprinkling of puns and twists in the story line that bring out a moral parable on the meaning of liberty, justice, and other social issues, make the fairy tale enjoyable for adults as well as children.

The story itself centers on a poor shepherd who overcomes enormous obstacles, including one ugly physical transformation, with the help of the forest elves and their magic. The shepherd is in love with a beautiful woman – in reality, a fairy changed into a beautiful young woman – and he is out to gain her affections and marry her.
