Sarah (O’Neal) is fifteen going on sixteen, and lives at home. Dad’s an Egyptologist; Mom refuses to acknowledge any generation gap; boy-friend wants to get her into the sack, but she refuses. Dodging him one day she meets Ashley (Burton), a once-chic artist who’s currently light on inspiration. He might be sixty but he’s hunky in that experienced way, and he has a Bohemian haven in the country where he plays Vivaldi. The pair get literary and have intense chats in which Sarah learns the difference between the Sistine Chapel and Burger Kings. Sarah tries the physical, but Ashley sagely demurs. Mom and Dad are horrified by the liaison.

Synopsis:

Brute Force was touted as being by far the toughest and most violent prison film Hollywood had ever made. Many European censors felt the same way and scenes were shortened for overseas release. Actually, the violence is essentially surface violence, and earlier prison films had been rougher in a psychological sense. Nevertheless, with all of those noir icons in the cast and behind the camera (especially Miklos Rosza’s music) the film made a welcome break in the increasingly formularized cycle of big-city crime noir films. Silver and Ward in Film Noir sum it up rather neatly: “Functioning as a blatant allegory for an existential vision of the world (Sartre’s No Exit can be seen as a theatrical counterpart) the prison of Brute Force becomes a living hell from which escape is impossible.” While it doesn’t date as a film, it is ironic (and a little sad) that current excesses of explicit violence on the screen are such that, by comparison, this nearly-fifty-year-old film now seems almost a model of decorum and relative restraint.

The husband and wife team of director Jules Dassin and actress Melina Mercouri, who first enjoyed international success with the comedy Never on Sunday, collaborated for the last time on this powerful drama. Maya (Melina Mercouri) is a famous actress who is returning to the stage for a production of the classic Greek tragedy Medea, in which she will play the title character, a mother who murders her children. Kostas (Andreas Voutsinas), Maya’s former lover, will be directing Maya in the production, and when he discovers that Brenda (Ellen Burstyn), an American woman, is housed in a nearby Greek prison for killing her offspring, he suggests that Maya should meet Brenda as a means of better understanding her character. Maya agrees, and their tense and emotional conversation is cross cut with the taxing rehearsals and performance of Medea.
