The story of the investigation to unravel the mysterious death of a beautiful young woman in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. She is not Krystyna Holzer, as stated in her kennkarte (German-issued identity document), but a Jewess kept hidden by a Pole – a polonized Saxon – attorney Karol Karlzer. Before the outbreak of war, the woman was his student as well as the object of his unrequited love. The case is assigned to Detective Chief Inspector Rafal Król, an officer of the so- -called Blue Police under the control of the German occupiers, but also a soldier of the Polish underground, sworn to execute his orders. It is a suspenseful story set in the faithfully-recreated reality of occupied Warsaw and Zakopane.

Once upon a time, back at the turn of the century, the milkmaid Gosia is caring for her cows on an idyllic rural countryside. The afternoon is hot, so she bathes naked in the river. The next day, a stranger-in-black appears on the scene and shows her a painting he had done of her in the nude. Embarrassed, but hardly offended, she makes his acquaintance and is soon introduced to the secret pleasures of life: love-making, the beauty of art, the music of Mozart, the delights of the dining table. The meadow becomes a natural backdrop for her lessons in life’s mysteries, in contrast to the moral concerns of her mother, the puritanical ethics of the church, and the puzzling medical diagnosis of the country doctor. “Maybe it’s something the devil told her,” they conclude. A rehearsal of the Andrzej Kurylewicz quintet is underway in the radio recording studio, with the following lineup: the leader (trumpet), Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski (saxophone), Wojciech Karolak (piano), Andrzej Dąbrowski (drums), Roman Dylag (bass). The musicians improvise, tease each other, point out mistakes and unclean playing. Kurylewicz corrects the score. A well-arranged whole begins to emerge from the polyphony of voices and sounds. Opus jazz is part of a documentation of the jazz movement in Poland initiated during the Black Series period. Janusz Majewski has captured a watershed moment in the history of Polish jazz, for it was in 1963 that the Kurylewicz quintet released Go Right, the first jazz longplay issued in Poland. Andrzej Kurylewicz (1932-2007) – trumpeter, pianist, creator of modern jazz and classical music, intensively cooperated with Polish film. His filmography counts several dozen items. Majewski in turn repeatedly engaged jazz musicians to compose and perform music for his feature films. Kurylewicz wrote the music for the following Majewski films: Docent H., Pierwszy pawilon, Sublokator, Ja gorę!, Lekcja martwego języka. The culmination of the director’s long-standing fascination with jazz turned out to be Ekscentrycy (2015), for which the music was composed by Wojciech Karolak, a member of Kurylewicz’s quintet.

Dramatic reconstruction of the case of a Polish woman named Emilia Margerita Gorgonowa who was tried for the murder of Elzbieta Zarembianka, the sixteen year old daughter of a successful architect in Lvov at the beginning of the 1930’s. Based on material in the Cracow archives, pertaining to the two trials as well as the diaries and notes of people closely connected to the case. The film attempts to discover why Gorgonowa was vilified and condemned by the public which had an effect on the outcome of the trial. It aims to present a faithful and documented picture of the events accompanying both trials.
