An astonishing array of paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, objects and materials fill room after room – but this is not a museum open to the general public. It is the home of the celebrated artist couple Jan Svankmajer and his late wife Eva, situated in the Czech Republic’s Horni Stankov Castle.

“Why did I make this film? Historical experience tells us that all the kunstkammer that have been created up to these days have been dismantled and sold off or destroyed after the death of their creators For example, the Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor collection and most recently André Breton’s kunstkammer. Yet these are unique documents of the state of the imagination at that time. Official museums cannot replace these collections because they lack personal commitment,” says Jan Švankmajer, explaining the motivation for making his latest film.

Kunstkamera is a walk through the castle and former granary in Horní Staňkov, where Švankmajer’s Kunstkamera is installed. However, it is not a Kunsthistorical film in the true sense of the word, but a film of the magical atmosphere of this collection and the environment in which it is located. The film is not simply a presentation of the exhibits; the artefacts are photographed with the added value of Švankmajer’s imaginative viewpoint in the “ordering of objects and interpretation, and not just verbal interpretation. “The Wunderkabinet that I am attempting to install at the Horní Staňkov castle should include the following range of choices: the art of natural peoples (Africa), l’art brut (especially the work of mediumists), the Archimboldesque principle, alchemy, natural history. Magic and surrealism should be the pins,” adds Jan Švankmajer.

A horror movie testing two approaches to running an insane asylum – absolute freedom versus control and punishment – within the context of a world that combines the worst of both. Jean Berlot, a young man subject to a nightmare of being forced into a straitjacket by two orderlies, is befriended by a marquis. At the marquis’s estate, Jean witnesses a black Mass, buries someone alive, and is invited to try preventive therapy. He’s willing to enter a sanatorium because he believes he can rescue a young woman from there who has told him that the real director and staff of the clinic are locked in the basement. Jean conspires with her to set them free: the horrors have only begun.

When a childless couple learn that they cannot have children, it causes great distress. To ease his wife’s pain, the man finds a piece of root in the backyard and chops it and varnishes it into the shape of a child. Eugene, an aging man, leads a double life: one real – the waking life he spends in the company of his wife of many years, Milana – and the other in his dreams, his sleeping hours being devoted to a recurring evolving dream of a beautiful young woman, Evgenia. Seeking to perpetuate his dream life, he goes to see a psychoanalyst, who attempts to provide an ongoing interpretation of his experiences. On the wall there are portraits of Freud and Jung, which become animated, alternately applauding, disapproving or fighting over her interpretations. The latest film from practising surrealist animator Jan Svankmajer is a mix of cut-out animation from photographs and live action segments, combining real actors with their animated photographs, against black and white backdrops of photographed Czech buildings. This stylistic approach which, Svankmajer jokes during the films introduction, was due to lack of funds and saved on catering, provides freedom for imaginative collages, and humorous nods in the direction of some of surrealism’s familiar practitioners (Dalí, Ernst, Buñuel). Drawn directly from Svankmajer’s own dreams, the film is a complex, multilayered story about aging, love, sex, childhood, trauma and dreams, steeped in Freudian and Jungian analysis and injected with a healthy dose of perversity. As Eugene labors in different versions of reality, Svankmajer’s own deeply curious take on reality manifests in all its surrealist splendor.
