Parisa Bakhtavar – Dayereh-e zangi AKA Tambourine (2008)

Observes the lives of condo dwellers upturned by the entry of a young woman and her friendly but gullible new pal. Quote: Dayereh-e Zangi (tambourine) became the all time box office champ in Iran when it was released in 2008. It is basically a social comedy but packed with popular stars of cinema & TV. It could be described as an Altmanesque film with many characters and a series of diverging story lines. There’s even a hint of this in the movie when one of the characters, who is a young amateur film maker, asks a pirate DVD seller if he can get him a copy of Altman’s Short Cuts. Most of the film takes place in a residential tower where installation of satellite dishes (which are officially banned in Iran) on the rooftop becomes a point of conflict, as well as the cause for a few hilarious situations. Dayereh means circle in Farsi and the script, written by Asghar Farhadi the acclaimed director of Chaharshanbe-soori, has a symmetrical shape to it as it starts with one of the protagonists having his necktie stolen by a passing motorist who is seen again at the end of the movie giving a ride to another of the main characters. Dayereh-Zangi is quite entertaining & funny at times. It does poke some mild fun at a number of targets including LA based TV channels, local government and even Kiarostami! (an amateur version of Ten being made by a young spiring film maker).

Plot Summary
Desiderium lyrically charts the hapless loves of three brothers: Majid, they young handicapped brother with a deformed head falls in love with Aghdas, a prostitute hired by his eldest brother Habib to entertain him, not knowing the truth about her profession. Karim, the middle brother is so infatuated with a quail that he almost completely ignores his wife and her emotions. Habib himself is in love with Foroogh, a tailor lady who lives with them, while his sense of responsibility about Majid keeps him from requiting her affections.

Overview
Sooteh-Delan AKA Desiderium (an ardent desire or longing, especially a feeling of loss or grief for something lost) was made in 1978 by director Ali Hatami. Though he failed to break out into the international circuit, Hatami is considered an important Iranian director and this film in particular found popular success domestically. It was rated the #4 Iranian film in Film magazine’s 2009 poll of 92 Iranian critics. The film stars Behrouz Vossoughi, one Iran’s most beloved actors.

Death surrounds Bahman, a director who hasn’t made a film in 24 years (he can’t get past the censors). He’s working on a documentary, for Japanese TV, on Iranian burial practices. On the anniversary of his wife’s death, a hitchhiker tells him a story of spousal abuse and infant mortality, he discovers that someone has been buried in his plot next to his wife, and he needs the help of his attorney, a well-connected fixer. He dreams of death, even as he investigates it for his film. His niece’s husband, a well-known writer, fails to return home; he searches hospitals for an unclaimed body. His heart disease is flaring up. Is he prepared for death? Is that all that’s left?

This extraordinarily bizarre film is a triumph of the crushingly personal. Bahman Farmanara, an Iranian filmmaker thwarted in his attempts to make movies for twenty-two years, made his comeback with this autobiographical fragment that literally defies all genre rules–it falls between every imaginable classification stool. Its sole resemblance to other, more celebrated films of the “Iranian New Wave” is in its acute meta-ness. Farmanara, playing himself in the most pained self-portrait of a director since Lucio Fulci’s CAT IN THE BRAIN, finally gets a project past the Iranian censors: a documentary for Japanese TV on Iranian burial rituals. In what at first seems either like a ripoff of Woody Allen, or a parody of TASTE OF CHERRY, Farmanara uses this morbid premise as an excuse to rehearse his own death and burial. What springs from this neurosis is neither funny, exactly, nor poignant. It dances to the beat of its own drummer, as elusive and smokelike in tone as a short story by Bruno Schulz or isaac Babel. One cannot say that Farmanara has shed all the rust of those twenty-two years; or, frankly, that his phlegmatic performance–he looks like Harold Bloom feeling the weight of world literature on his shoulders–works. But as an exemplar of making movies as the voicing of individual feelings and beliefs, SMELL OF CAMPHOR goes to the head of the class.

A perversely fascinating drama about a man and a woman making their way through a war-torn, mountainous region, dispensing large sums of money in plastic bags from the back of their SUV, “Modest Reception” is extremely well made, eminently watchable, but not especially likable or satisfying. The likability factor comes into play because, as part of their mysterious game, the arrogant, amoral protagonists attach sadistic conditions to their handouts, humiliating (and worse) their beneficiaries.
