Hsu Hsiao-Ming’s intense and sombre drama knocks down one more long-standing Taiwanese taboo by showing the KMT’s brutal attack on prodemocracy demonstrators in the city of Kaohsiung in 1979. But his point here is not to lament the death of old ideals. What concerns him is the way that real political questions have been made to seem irrelevant in the gogetting nineties, and the way that one young woman in particular reacts to having everything she believed in snatched away from her. Finally, you see, Heartbreak Island is a love story. A love story with a sad ending.
