Synopsis
Brother and sister meet again after 15 years and fall in love with each other. The siblings Christine and Stefan grew up separated from each other due to their parents’ divorce and have no knowledge of each other. Later in life they meet and enters into a relationship.(imdb)

The children of two separated parents (the father lives in Barcelona, the mother in Germany) Stefano and Cristina Handenberger meet again after fifteen years apart (the young woman also lives in Spain). Stefano, who discovers in his sister – a beautiful girl – for the first time the woman and her charm, falls in love with her. Soon, Cristina – who in Barcelona is the lover of the mature Don Jaime – leaves again. After some time, her brother joins her, officially to visit his father, actually to find her. In ”Short Letter, Long Farewell,” a German playwright is pursued by his wife, an actress, who wants to kill him. They scramble across the United States – Providence, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Tucson, northern Oregon – to California, where they meet the director John Ford, who utters sage advice that enables them to part in peace. The novel is full of vivid snapshots of American characters and scenes, and the idiosyncratic mixture of narrative, interior monologue, natural description and cultural themes and cliches is a brilliant concoction.

Early novella from Peter Handke – the German enfant terrible who had a great run in the 1970s similar to fellow countrymen Herzog, Fassbinder, and his pal Wim Wenders. Partly European-in-existential-crisis story (eh), but it’s also equally a road trip, love story, and revenge narrative with a handful of unsettling Hitchcockian elements.

It’s like “Goalie’s Anxiety” with a more ruminative first person narrator and more genre trappings, although they’re ultimately less important.

The book is deeply about the iconography of America with the story opening in Rhode Island and winding throughout the country. Some insights prove dated, some still relevant. It includes several nice digressions on the films of John Ford and has a substantial appearance by Ford himself in the last chapter of the book!

The tone and pacing is leisurely like an early 70s film but the prose is beautifully precise, unearthing startling observations every few paragraphs. Excellent essay about it by Greil Marcus in “Dustbin of History,” too

The young electrician Walter Fendrich has started a promising career. Everything seems to be on the right track. As the future husband of his employer’s daughter Walter even can hope to once succeed him as head of the company. All of a sudden, the visit of a girl from his home town, whom he last saw seven years ago, changes his entire life. Walter realizes that his entire life so far has been all wrong. He breaks out of his former “reasonable“ life and gives up and the wonderful security of the affluent society. He simply disapperas without a farewell or explanation… The Bread of those Early Years expresses the concepts of concern to German intellectuals in the early sixties: criticism of the petrified conditions in the society of the economic miracle and the search for new forms of expression, life and thought. Vesely’s film is an attempt not only to describe such a search as Walter Fendrich gradually becomes conscious of his life, but it is a search in itself.

One of the first feature-length films of the “New German Cinema”, Herbert Vesely’s Das Brot der frühen Jahre, made in 1961, was envisioned to be a German variation on Alain Resnais’ ast Year at Marienbad, complete with disorienting visual imagery and an open story structure that refused narrative closure and left many questions unanswered. In contrast to films produced in a studio system, like the classic Hollywood or Ufa films that were made under the control of studio executives, New German Cinema was entirely director-driven. New German directors saw themselves as “authors” who should have complete creative control over their projects.
