Synopsis:
Berlin, the German capital again, a few years after the fall of the Wall. The city in upheaval is also changing the lives of its inhabitants. A young photographer experiences these changes as a rupture, he looks into an unclear, unsettling future and increasingly feels like a stranger in his old city. He and his friends from the generation of the children of the Wall try to find a new identity without losing the old one. Young artists who fail the profitability test of the market economy. In his search, Robert Paris ends up far away, in India. Back in Berlin, he starts developing photos again – the first in years…

In the mid-nineties, director Helga Reidemeister decided to make a film about the East Berlin photographer Robert Paris. The film ultimately becomes a reflection on how one can live in a rapidly changing city, after a system change from today to tomorrow – without losing oneself.

Helga Reidemeister is interested in the architectural photography of East Berlin photographer Paris and goes to Potsdamer Platz, which is currently being torn up for a huge construction project. Down below, in the subway station, which has been closed since 1961, Robert Paris has captured the traces of time – he is no longer interested in the construction above, he says it is no longer his city. Reidemeister asks questions, follows him on his photographic expeditions through old Berlin, to his apartment, to his friends, even to India. Paris, once a protagonist of the East German punk scene, only finds something like stability again through deceleration and empathy in India and a new photographic perspective.

PLOT: Irene Rakowitz, aged 48, is a divorced mother of four, who lives with her two youngest children in West Berlin’s Märkisches Viertel public housing district, surviving on disability payments. Her ex-husband, a former miner, lives in the same high-rise. But loud and abrasive conflict persists regarding his ongoing influence on the children. The older daughters are hateful and judgmental of their mother, calling her a ‘crackpot’. Irene Rakowitz holds nothing back as she talks about why her family is falling apart, while at the same time expressing, sometimes vehemently, her own ambitions, in front of the camera and again during the editing process, throughout which she is associated.
