Synopsis
During the Ming Dynasty, Tsao Sui Yan(Donnie Yen), the power-hungry and ruthless eunuch leader of East Chamber, craves his own kingdom. He intends to destroy the rebelling clans by using a traitorous secretary’s children as bait. Two do-gooders by the name of Chow Wai-On(Tony Leung) and Yau Mo-Yin(Brigitte Lin) save the innocent children from the fiendish clutches of the East Chamber, only to find refuge at the Dragon Inn. Ultimately, the two warring factions – the rebels led by Chow Wai-on and Mo-yan Yau, and the East Chamber group led by Tsao – end up in the rundown Dragon Inn right in the middle of the desert. Jade King(Maggie Cheung), the beautiful owner and proprietor of Dragon Inn, hopes to cash in on the incident. But problems arise when Wai-on, desperate for the quickest route of escape, attempts to marry Jade in hopes of prying her for information about an escape route; and the two clans go head-to-head in a no-holds barred finale battle.

A young man who works in a bank and a young woman who works at the Peking Opera in a bustling Chinese town at the turn of the century are looking for mates (along with dozens of other young singles) during an annual festival and continually cross paths, but instead of connecting, they keep antagonizing each other. When the man, Kong, is killed in a bank robbery, he appears as a ghost to the young woman, Yan Yan, two weeks later and manages to get her to go back in time with him to the day of the murder to try and change history. Things take a frenetic turn as the two keep running into their earlier selves and the now-dead robber’s ghost shows up to conspire with his living self to thwart the couple. A horrible fate awaits the couple in an eerie afterlife if they fail…

The film’s kinetic energy never slows down and propels each scene to the next, yet never loses sight of it’s character’s intertwined motivations. Truly worthy of it’s many high praises, it remains an endearing classic of Hong Kong cinema, as well as a creative high point of Hark’s illustrious career.

AMG: Shanghai Blues combines romantic comedy, slapstick, music, and several classic coincidences (a favorite ploy of director and writer Tsui Hark to tell the story of a man (Kenny Bee) and a female dancer (Sylvia Chang) who meet under a Shanghai bridge in 1937 as they seek shelter from the Japanese bombing of the city. They are immediately drawn to each other and make a pact to meet under the bridge again when the war has ended. But their plans are thwarted and ten years later, the man gets an apartment in Shanghai (where he works as a musician, songwriter, and clown) unaware that the dancer — for whom he has been searching — is his downstairs neighbor. Meanwhile, a young, bubbly woman makes friends with the dancer at the club where she performs and inadvertently causes a considerable mix-up that at first looks fated to keep the star-crossed lovers apart.
